[dropcap]D[/dropcap]avid O Russell’s American Hustle and Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave have both received seven nominations each as the Golden Globe nominations were announced last week. Both directors will battle for the Best Director award, with Alexander Payne, Alfonso Cuaron and Paul Greengrass, whilst British actors Chiwetal Ejiofor and Idris Elba are both nominated for Best Actor in a Film Drama, for 12 Years A Slave and Long Walk to Freedom respectively. Other actors to compete in this category are Matthew McConaughey, Robert Redford and Tom Hanks.
The same two actors, Ejiofor and Elba are astonishingly also contending in the Best Actor in a TV movie or mini-series category, for their individual performances in Dancing on the Edge and Luther. Fellow actors in this category include Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, both nominated for their performances in Behind the Candelabra, and Al Pacino for his portrayal of Phil Spector.
12 Years A Slave is up for Best Film Drama, alongside Captain Phillips, Gravity, Rush and Philomena. Michael Fassbender picked up a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his plantation owner role in the British film, as Lupita Nyong’o is recognised in the Best Supporting Actress category. The final two nominations for the film are Best Screenplay and Best Score.
American Hustle is shortlisted for Best Film Comedy or Musical, with Her, Inside Llewyn Davis, Nebraska and The Wolf of Wall Street. Russell’s follow up to Silver Linings Playbook also picked up four nominations for its cast, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence.
Bale is up for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical, with Leonardo DiCaprio, Oscar Issac, Joaquin Phoenix and Bruce Dern.
Lawrence will take on Nyong’o, Julia Roberts, Sally Hawkins and June Squibb in the Best Supporting Actress category. Her fellow Silver Linings Playbook star Cooper faces competition from Fassbender, Daniel Bruhl, Jared Leto and Barkhad Abdi for Best Supporting Actor.
Finally, Adams will vie it out for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical, against Meryl Streep, Greta Gerwig, Julia-Louis Dreyfus and Julie Delphy.
The Best Actress in a Film Drama nominations are overpowered by the Brits this year, featuring Dame Judi Dench, Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet leading the nominations. Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett complete this strong category.
Other film award nominations announced include Best Original Song and Best Animated Film.
