Oscars 2014 – The Winners
As Jennifer Lawrence steps out of her limo, dressed in a gorgeous Dior gown and a backwards necklace, she immediately trips on a cone and falls down on to the red carpet. Yes, it must be time for this year’s Oscars….
Ellen DeGeneres hosted the 86th Academy Awards last night, a welcome return after last hosting the ceremony in 2007.
Gravity was the big winner of the night, taking home a total of seven statuettes. Alfonso Cuaron’s sci-fi drama won Best Original Score, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Visual Effects, Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing, as the man himself took home the Oscar for Best Director. After all these wins, it seemed likely Gravity would also grab Best Picture, but instead it was beaten by Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave, which also picked up Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress, for Lupita Nyong’o’s harrowing portrayal of Patsey.
Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, the male stars of Dallas Buyers Club, double-bagged the Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Supporting Actor gongs, with McConaughey thanking himself for the win. The film also won the award for Best Make-Up and Hairstyling.
Cate Blanchett beat Amy Adams, Meryl Streep, Judi Dench and Sandra Bullock to win the Best Actress in a Leading Role award for her role in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine.
Both Frozen and The Great Gatsby were double Oscar winners. Disney’s film about a Queen carrying around a dangerous power won Best Animated Feature film and Best Original Song ‘Let It Go’, which Idina Menzel performed live at the ceremony. A beautiful performance despite the fact John Travolta had introduced her as Adela Dazeem(?). Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel was awarded Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.
Spike Jonze collected the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, for the weird and wonderful Siri-like romance movie Her.
Other winners of the night included The Great Beauty for Best Foreign Language Film, Mr Hublot for Best Animated Short Film, Helium for Best Live Action Short Film, The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life for Best Documentary Short Subject and 20 Feet from Stardom for Best Documentary Feature.
Although the highlight of the night has to be DeGeneres posting a ‘selfie’ with the likes of Brad Pitt, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Bradley Cooper and Julia Roberts (among others), causing Twitter to crash completely, as it became the most re-tweeted tweet of all time. Congrats Ellen!
