Tom Hanks announced on US TV’s Late Show with David Letterman that he has Type 2 diabetes.
The actor also discussed his condition in an interview with the BBC to promote his new film Captain Phillips; he mentioned he will now avoid taking on roles requiring him to put on weight due to his condition. He referred to those particular roles as “a young man’s game”, which is a fair point, as being an actor can be very physically demanding and certain roles are more suited to younger actors.
Hanks’ openness about his condition may help to raise awareness about the illness. He believes that his diabetes was hereditary, but also blames his lifestyle too. He added that his condition is part of life, and he feels just fine.
Hopefully the actor will continue to take on interesting roles for many years to come – there is a buzz going around that Hanks’ role in Captain Phillips could win him another Oscar.
