A trailer for Jurassic World is finally online and it is a welcome return for the series.
Jurassic World is set years after Steven Spielberg’s original film, and the dinosaur park has moved to a new island called Isla Nublar. The park has become quite popular with tourists who are accustomed to seeing its dinosaurs on a regular basis; this has prompted the corporate types who run the place to take risks by creating bigger dinosaurs to woo the crowds. Scientists working at the park (including Bryce Dallas Howard who plays a geneticist) have used genetic modification to create a super dinosaur; the Frankenstein’s monster they’ve created is apparently smarter, faster and stronger than all the other creatures at the theme park. Things inevitably go bad when the creature does a runner and a behavioral research specialist (played by Chris Pratt) tells the managers to close the park. People start to panic and everyone tries to flee the place before they get eaten by the dinosaurs running amok.
Jurassic World has a nice supporting cast including: Vincent D’Onofrio, Omar Sy, Judy Greer, B.D. Wong, Jake Johnson, Ty Simpkins and Katie McGrath. The film is directed by Colin Trevorrow and based on a script written by Michael Crichton which bodes well. Chris Pratt’s character, Owen seems quite similar to Jeff Goldblum’s character from the first film: he warns the scientists that using genetic modification is a bad idea and it will all end in tears; his advice is ignored as is to be expected and all hell breaks loose.
One of the good things about the trailer is how it doesn’t overdo it with CGI dinosaur footage: the dinosaurs themselves are not shown that much and the actors get to spend a fair bit of time on-screen. A huge aquatic dinosaur which is apparently called a Plesiosaurus is shown emerging from the water and a few velociraptors also appear briefly. The super GM dinosaur is never shown fully which is nice as it allows the imagination to conjure up images of what it might look like. There’s a nice iconic shot of the famous gates to Jurassic Park opening as guests travel through by shuttle car. The music is nice too as a piano version of the Jurassic Park theme is played at one stage during the trailer. It’s an effective trailer which thrills without giving away too much.
Jurassic World will be released on June 12th, 2015. Check out the trailer and share your thoughts.
