It’s continued to smash record after record but it seems Grand Theft Auto V won’t stop breaking records, now adding probably its most remarkable record yet to its portfolio.
In Take-Two’s results for their Fiscal Second Quarter 2018, the publisher revealed the Rockstar Games’ worldwide phenomenon Grand Theft Auto V has now sold in more than 85 million units
The new record makes GTA V “the all-time best-selling video game”.
According to The NPD Group, the record is both in terms of revenues and units, based on combined U.S. digital and physical sales across PC, console and portable devices.
“Our positive momentum continued in the second quarter, enabling Take-Two to deliver another period of better-than-expected operating results,” said Strauss Zelnick, Chairman and CEO of Take-Two.
Back in July, the open-world action-adventure title was currently the UK’s best selling boxed game in 2017.
Shortly before that, it topped the UK sales chart for the 13th time almost four years after its release.
It was also named as “the biggest contributor to British economy” in gaming history.
Upon its release, GTA V quickly became the biggest entertainment launch in history, earning $800 million during its first 24 hours on sale.
Two days later it officially broke $1 billion in sales, beating major films such as The Avenger’s Assemble and Avatar.
Critically acclaimed worldwide, the BAFTA award winning title also out-sold GTA IV, beat The Last of Us as the biggest digital release on PlayStation, broke 7 Guinness World Records and won numerous Game of the Year awards.
The game would later go on to be re-released on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
