Bethesda kicked off their 2019 E3 press conference by announcing updates and expansions for some of their biggest games including Fallout 76, The Elder Scrolls, and Rage 2. A few brand-new titles were announced including Ghostwire: Tokyo, a very promising title from the makers of Resident Evil and The Evil Within. Video game streaming seems to be all the rage right now and Bethesda has jumped on that bandwagon with a service of their own.
Fallout 76 Updates
Despite Fallout 76 receiving mixed reviews upon its release last year, Bethesda have been hard at work to improve the game. During the press conference, Todd Howard took the stage to show off the new updates for Fallout 76, including a new 52 player battle royale mode called Nuclear Winter and the Wastelanders update, which will have new story quests, NPCs to interact with, and branching dialogue options. Fallout 76 will also have a free trial period from June 10th-17th where players can play the base game as well as Nuclear Winter.
Elder Scrolls
It’s still a while away from Elder Scrolls VI, but in the meantime, Bethesda is focused on releasing more expansions for The Elder Scrolls Online and updates for Legends, and Blades. Mobile game The Elder Scrolls: Blades will release on the Nintendo Switch later this year, and will feature cross-play with mobile versions of the game. The Elder Scrolls’ other card-based mobile game, Legends, will get a new update on 27th June bringing with it new cards. The Elder Scrolls Online will get 2 new DLCs called Dragonhold and Scalebreaker later this year with each featuring brand new dungeons to explore and plenty of dragons to battle.
Ghostwire: Tokyo
The creator of the Resident Evil (1996) series and The Evil Within (2014), Shinji Mikami, came on stage during Bethesda’s briefing to reveal the brand-new title from Tango Gameworks, Ghostwire: Tokyo. The trailer shows citizens of Tokyo suddenly disappearing into thin air, leaving only their clothes behind. A lone hooded figure calmly walks through the city, armed with a bow and arrows hunting for the supernatural creatures behind the mass disappearances. Ghostwire: Tokyo will not be a survival horror like The Evil Within and its sequel, but according to creative director Ikumi Nakamura, will be “spooky”. No release date has been announced for the game, and neither has the platform.
Commander Keen
In this free-to-play mobile game, you’ll be able to relive the early nineties once again as classic platformer Commander Keen (1990) is revived. Commander Keen is visually inspired by Saturday morning cartoons and will have you playing as the kids from the original game as they use clever gadgets to battle alien invaders. The game will feature a single-player story mode as well as PvP mode.
Rage 2
Having only been recently released, Rage 2 is already getting updates and will be getting a new expansion pack called Rise of the Ghosts. Bethesda have also promised that new content will be getting delivered on a weekly basis to meet their goal of making the game unpredictable. Rise of the Ghosts will bring with it new enemies, vehicles, and cheat codes, as well as a brand new gameplay area and campaign.
Wolfenstein: Youngblood
Wolfenstein: Youngblood was revealed by Bethesda to be a co-op focused game, the first in the Wolfenstein (1981) series to do so. Set two decades after the events of Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (2017), you will play as the twin daughters of BJ Blazkowicz in an alternate timeline where Nazi Germany won the war. After travelling to Paris to rescue their father, Jess and Soph Blazkowicz find themselves a part of the French Resistance trying to liberate the country. Wolfenstein: Youngblood is set to be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, and Google Stadia on 26th July.
Deathloop
The developers of Dishonored (2012) and Prey (2017), Arkane Studios, have revealed Deathloop as their next game. Playing as either two characters you find yourself stuck in a deadly time loop. Every time Colt or Julianna dies they simply wake up in a different location and so begins the cycle. Colt believes the only way to break it is to kill Julianna once and for all. But Julianna, on the other hand, enjoys the cycle of death and rebirth and believes it will only continue if she keeps on killing Colt.
Doom Eternal
Bringing an end to Bethesda’s conference, id Software showed off new gameplay footage of Doom Eternal and revealed a launch date of 22nd November for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, and Stadia releases. We also saw footage of Doom Eternal’s new multiplayer mode. Named Battle Mode, the multiplayer feature of Doom: Eternal will see a 1 v 2 handicap match taking place where one player controls a Doom Slayer to face off against two player-controlled demons.
Orion
A section of the press conference was dedicated to showing off Bethesda’s new streaming software Orion. Developed by id Software, Orion will allow players to stream the latest Bethesda games. To show off its capabilities there was a demonstration of Doom being played live on a mobile phone running at 60FPS. Bethesda says Orion is 20% faster per frame than streaming games without it and will help players who have internet data caps or who live far away from data centres, by taking up 40% less bandwidth than non-Orion games.
