According to reports coming from The Sun, Adrian Edmondson has been cast in an undisclosed role in the latest sequel to the Star Wars Saga.
Edmondson, best known for starring alongside the late Rik Mayall in Bottom and The Young Ones, has recently played Count Ilya Rostov in the BBC’s adaption of Leo Tolstoy‘s War and Peace. Edmondson has played a number of dramatic roles in the past, including Tom Tiernan in Nick Murphy‘s Blood (2012) and DCI Warner in Prey (2014). Since 2006, he has also taken an increasing interest in music, forming his own band, The Bad Shepherds, and joining the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band.
According to an unnamed source, the comic will appear in a ‘top secret’ and ‘eccentric’ role.
“Ade is one of the most-loved comedy stars in the UK,” stated the source. “But even he would admit Star Wars is a surprise move for him.”
The source went on to claim that, despite Rian Johnson being the one on directing duties for the sequel, The Force Awakens filmmaker JJ Abrams was instrumental in the decision to cast Edmondson. This suggests that Abrams occupies a similar (albeit probably unofficial) position to Kevin Feige in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – a driving force behind the franchise’s overall creative direction.
If this casting rumour turns out to be true, then Edmondson will join regulars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie and Andy Serkis. Other new cast members include Kelly Marie Tran, Benicio Del Toro and Laura Dern.
As of April 2016, filming on the as of named sequel has already begun. Some scenes, specifically those taking place on the island of Skellig Michael, have already been shot.
Star Wars: Episode VIII will be released on December 15, 2017.
