If, like us, you loved 2017’s It then you’re very excited to find out the news on IT: Chapter 2 (2019). If that’s the case you’re in luck because we’ve got all the available details our writers could cobble together from an hour and a half of googling. The only way to know more is to have read the book.
Who’s the Director?
Andy Muschietti, same as the first one.
Who’s Writing It?
Gary Dauberman, creator of the popular The Conjuring horror franchise, is currently listed as the only writer on IMDB. However, we do have reports that Jeffrey Jurgensen — known for writing Agent Cody Banks (2002) has also contributed to the process in some way. Also, Stephen King did write the book. People still read books, right?
When and Where is it Set?
Most of the film is almost certainly going to be set in Derry, the home town of the Losers Club and the hunting ground of the titular It. This will almost certainly mean that filming will take place in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada.
Furthermore, we know that the Chapter 2 will be set exactly 27 years following the first movie, which by our calculators would place it squarely in 2016.
What’s the story?
When we left the Losers Club at the end of Chapter One they made a promise to return to Derry and kill the monster if IT ever managed to return. Judging by the laws of narrative, we’d say that’s a pretty idea where everything starts.
In terms of specifics, we know at least two scenes which were cut from the original film will be included in the sequel. One scene will be set in the 1600s, during a much earlier attack by the creature which came to be known as Pennywise. Fans of the book would know this scene as The Fire at the Black Spot, which was apparently too frightening to be included in the original film.
Okay, but what about the casting?
You’re in for a treat. The casting for IT: Chapter 2 has not been called “The Avengers of horror” for nothing.
In February 2018, Jessica Chastaine announced she would be taking over the role of Beverly Marsh from Sophia Lillis. This followed a long period of speculation which saw names such as Amy Adams and Bryce Dallas Howard put forward to play the role.
A couple of months later, in April 2018, James McAvoy and Bill Hader were announced as Bill Denbrough (the leader of the Losers Club) and Richie Tozier. McAvoy has long been an acting tour de force while Bill Hader, primarily known as a comedic actor, has recently found much acclaim through his HBO show Barry (2018), which sees Hader take the roll of a midwestern hitman in the LA art scene.
In May, The Wire (2002) alumni James Ransone announced that he would be taking the role of Eddie Kaspbrak. A few weeks later Andy Bean and Jay Ryan joined the cast to play Stanley Uris and Ben Hanscom respectively. So far we have no information on Mr Ryan’s opinions on New Kids on the Block.
Rounding out the Losers Club as Mike Hanlon is Isaiah Mustafa. Mr Mustafa has had a long career working on shows such as Chuck 2010), Nikita (2012), Selfie (2014) and Shadowhunters 2015), including several roles in films such as Horrible Bosses (2012) and The Island (2005). Internationally, Mr Mustafa is known as the former spokesman for Old Spice deodorant — The Man Your Man Could Smell Like.
Returning from the original film is Bill Skarsgård as the titular It.
Is it filming now?
According to James McAvoy it is.
