2013 was a phenomenal year for gaming. With The Last of Us’ debut, the reboot of Tomb Raider, Beyond: Two Souls entering the Tribecca Film Festival, the launch of PS4, Xbox One, and, of course, Grand Theft Auto V dominating not, only the gaming industry, but the entire entertainment industry, 2013 was probably gaming’s biggest year yet. What could possibly top it all?
Well from the looks of some of the upcoming games, 2014 could be an even better year for gamers around the world. Just what does this year have in store for us that can out-do 2013? Well, here’s the top 10 games for this year.
10. Alien: Isolation
Release date: TBA
Consoles: Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, PC
So after the disappointing game that was Alien Colonial Marines I think everyone thought it would be a long time before we saw another Alien game. So when they announced Isolation it would come as no surprise to anyone that people had their doubts about it. But it was a pleasant surprise when we were shown the very impressive footage of Alien: Isolation. As a game that has been called suspenseful, scary and downright terrifying it defiantly shows a great amount of potential. It so shows the signs of being like the original Dead Space minus the weapons and 10 times the scale of suspense. So let’s just hope that this game lives up to its promises, as it has quite a few.
9. Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeros
Release date: Spring 2014
Consoles: Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4
The Metal Gear Solid series is going to appear twice on this list but when it comes to Metal Gear having two games out in one year, the more the better. There will be loads of people questioning if this is a game or just an over priced demo but if it is a demo or a tutorial for Phantom Pain as soon as you put a price on it I class it as a game. With a new voice actor, beautiful visuals and smooth new gameplay, that is much more open to all play styles, a day and night cycle, hopefully a satisfying game until Phantom Pain is released.
8. Wolfenstein: The New Order
Release date: TBA
Consoles: Xbox One, Xbox 360 PS3, PC
When I played this last year at the EuroGamer Expo I didn’t expect it to be much better then the previous title we had a few years back, expecting it not to be anything more then a generic shooter. But as soon as I started playing, it gripped me and I felt like it had come back to its routes as a tough shooter with a sense of tactics and thought behind it. It goes back to routes of the original games with what seems like an interesting story in a Nazi run London full of robots and a hell of a lot of Nazi Soldiers (maybe a robot Hitler included for the full package). But I will say that if you’re a fan of the original games and are looking for that experience back then you have it here.
7. South Park: The Stick of Truth
Release date: March 7th
Consoles: Xbox 360, PS3, PC
With all the talk of next-gen we cant forget some of the great content coming out on last-gen. So with a game that’s had more then a few problems, it still doesn’t make it any less exciting, and with the writers of the TV show strongly behind it, and the original voice actors on board, it sounds and looks to be amazing.
6. Dark Souls II
Release date: March 14th
Consoles: Xbox 360, PS3, PC
Finally we have a sequel to a game that has more people raging and throwing their toys out the pram then that annoying, confusing ending to LOST. A game that, when the closed BETA released for one day, I made sure I was alone so I could rage all I wanted. Which I did and it made me happy because it shows that it’s no less challenging and is staying with what made the original game so great. Its also a game that I’m glad to say that even if your playing with a friend doesn’t make it any less challenging and visuals that are gorgeous for the last gen.
5. Infamous: Second Son
Release date: March 21st
Consoles: PS4
I guess this is the first massive exclusive for Sony after the less then brilliant, Killzone: Shadow Fall. This game shows brilliant visuals, a very likeable & funny character and brand new powers with a interesting story carrying on from the aftermath of Infamous 2. So with new powers such as smoke and neon and brand new enemies, with elemental powers also, it looks to change up the mix a bit. I have no doubt that Sucker Punch Productions know what they’re doing and with a few different special editions of the game for you to choose I feel that Sony could be onto a winner with this one.
4. Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain
Release date: TBA
Consoles: Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4
Like I said earlier: there would be two Metal Gear games on this list. This game is the proper sequel that promises to have new stealth gameplay and an full open world to explore. With Keifer Sutherland behind the voice of Snake, this one is certainly looking promising to be one of the most anticipated titles on everyone’s list. Lets hope that we have more of those great 40 minute cut scenes in this one.
3. TitianFall
Release date: March 13th
Consoles: PC, Xbox One, Xbox 360
Titanfall is looking to be Xbox One’s killer game this year. Having dominated the first-person shooter multiplayer market on the 360, why not do it again with a new IP? It’s looking to be not only the most anticipated game of the first quarter of the year, but, for most people, it’s that one game on their must play list. With smooth 30FPS and gameplay that blows your mind no one could be judged for looking forward to the game coming out. Also if you have a spare couple hundred pounds you can have your own small-scale mech statues showing your full support.
2. Evolve
Release date: Autumn 2014
Consoles: Xbox One, PS4, PC
The new game from the creators of the Left for Dead series is on its way and you can’t help but feel we are looking at another winner. Yes, we haven’t actually seen any footage of the game yet apart from a few screenshots but you cant help but hope that the game is going to be one of the top contenders for the best shooter of the year. With a four-player match up against one person as the monster, it promises to be show great hunting gameplay and acts of stealth. So five friends together we could be looking at hours of fun with people interchanging between who is the monster. So looks very promising and one game that if you haven’t had it on your list I would think about it now.
1.Watch Dogs
Release date: Spring 2014
Consoles: Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, PC, Wii U
There’s so many games that could have been number one on this list but this game is something that looks to change how we play games. Having sat in on a tech demo for the game I can say that we are looking at something that promises to bring a brilliant beautiful open world that feels alive and can bend to your will. With the great addition of the second companion app, it will be a great addition to the game. I just hope that this game hasn’t delayed itself too late so that people have lost some of that excitement. With Watch Dogs, we could be looking at another great year for Ubisoft.
