In celebration of Movember Roobla takes a look at some of the finest examples of facial hair ever seen in the movies. Brace yourself, things are going to get hairy in our top 10 movie moustaches…
10. TIMOTHY DALTON in HOT FUZZ
When he’s not busy being Bond he’s tearing up the streets of Sandford in Edgar Wright’s Hot Fuzz. Starring alongside policemen Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, Dalton and his hairy upper lip are a viable suspect for much of the film…
9. CLARK GABLE in GONE WITH THE WIND
Sporting a moustache that you could set a spirit level to, Clark Gable pulled off suave sophistication back in 1939 with his mix of dapper suit and fine facial hair.
8. SAMUEL L. JACKSON in PULP FICTION
Proving that moustaches aren’t just a pre 1940’s fad, Samuel L. Jackson’s mean-looking moustache in Quentin Tarantino’s cult classic Pulp Fiction lands in at number seven on our list.
7. SAM ELLIOTT in THE BIG LEBOWSKI
Boy can this man grow a moustache. Rarely seen without it, Sam Elliott and his moustache made an impression as the narrator, known otherwise as ‘The Stranger’, in Joel and Ethan Coen’s The Big Lebowski.
6. CHARLIE CHAPLIN in basically everything he ever did
It’s difficult to picture what a clean shaven Charlie Chaplin would look like. With his ‘tache being a nigh constant companion throughout his filmic career, Chaplin’s was one of the first moustaches committed to film.
5. SACHA BARON COHEN in BORAT
Famous for his outlandish roles, Sacha Baron Cohen caused one of the biggest upsets of his career with the release of Borat in 2006. With a giant bear and and an equally giant moustache in tow Borat travelled across America offending almost everybody he met (whether it was the moustache’s fault we’re not sure).
4. MAX VON SYDOW in FLASH GORDON
The 80’s may have a lot to answer for if they’re ever put on trial for their crimes against fashion, and Flash Gordon may be one of the first to stand trial. His nemesis Ming the Merciless however is all good in our books as he sports a rather impressive moustache.
3. WILL FERRELL in ANCHORMAN
Milk may have been a bad choice for Anchorman’s Ron Burgundy in more ways than one as it would doubtlessly have lingered in his rather full moustache for weeks. Mimicking newscasters of a bygone era, Will Ferrell completed his look with the famous ‘tache.
2. DUSTIN HOFFMAN in HOOK
While he may be the scary nemesis of everybody’s favourite child who never grew up (we say never but he inevitably did and turned into Robin Williams), Hook, played by Dustin Hoffman in Steven Spielberg’s child fantasy film of the same name, is memorable equally for his impressive moustache. He may wear a wig but the moustache will always be very real to us!
1. DANIEL DAY LEWIS in GANGS OF NEW YORK
Daniel Day Lewis tops our list. Famous for his commitment to a role, his appearance as Bill ‘The Butcher’ in Gangs of New York gave us not only a slice of fine acting but an awe-inspiring moustache. Good work!
