Tom Hardy is reportedly in line to play the lead role in the big screen adaption of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell. He’ll play Sam Fischer, a highly-trained special operative in a fictional black-ops operation called Echelon.
Ubisoft Motion Pictures has yet to find a studio with which to work, although the developer has held discussions with both Warner Bros and Paramount. This will be the second major movie that Ubisoft is looking to get on the big screen after setting up Assassin’s Creed at New Regency and Fox, which Michael Fassbender will co-produce and headline.
Ubisoft CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet had the following to say about the Hardy discussions:
“Tom Hardy is currently one of the biggest talents in the film industry, and he has a phenomenal ability to take on complex and varied roles with his broad range of acting skills. His involvement in the Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell movie is exciting news for movie and videogame fans alike.
“Meanwhile, Eric Singer is one of the most talented writers of the moment, and … we’re confident he’ll bring a fresh approach and create a thrilling story … while still respecting all the codes and traditions of the franchise that are so important to fans.”
Singer also penned Black List script American Bullshit, which David O. Russell will direct with Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner set to star.
Game has sold more than 23 million copies of Splinter Cell since its debut in 2002. Six games have been released so far, with Splinter Cell: Blacklist being released next spring, developed by Ubisoft Toronto. The game’s esteemed reputation and overwhelming popularity will make it even more of a challenge to bring it to the big screen, however it’s doubtful Hardy would step up to the task unless he saw potential in the project.
Hardy’s currently working on George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road playing the titular role of Max Rockatansky.
