15 games we can’t wait to play In 2019

We may only be half way through January, but 2019 is already shaping up to be a big year for video games. With some of the highly anticipated games from last year’s E3 still without a release date, we’ll no doubt see more of them throughout the year. As for the titles with a release date of this year, we’ve put together a list of the 15 games we can’t wait to play.

Resident Evil 2 remake

The Resident Evil 2 remake takes the original 1998 game and completely remakes it from the ground up using the same engine as Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017). The real world has changed a bit in the 21 years since the original game was released, so Capcom have reshaped the game to meet modern expectations by removing fixed camera angles and using new elements to conceal enemies.

Kingdom Hearts III

Kingdom Hearts III was announced way back in 2013 and now 14 years since the release of Kingdom Hearts II, the final chapter in the Dark Seekers Saga will be released later this month. While we’re not sure where the story will take Sora and co., we do know that the plot will pick up immediately after the events of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance (2012). We’ll also get to visit some of our favourite Disney worlds including Hercules, Monster’s Inc., Toy Story and Frozen.

Metro Exodus

Set two years after the events of 2013’s Metro: Last Light, the third instalment of the series puts players back in control of Artyom and continues the story from Last Light’s Redemption ending. The story takes place over the course of one year and sees Artyom venture above ground to flee Moscow and set off to the far east in search of a new life.

Anthem

BioWare’s Anthem is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated and ambitious games of 2019. The third-person shooter will be set in a futuristic world where players venture out into a hostile online open world wearing fully customizable exosuits to complete missions. Featuring both single and multiplayer gameplay, players will be able to seamlessly switch between the two with actions you take in the multiplayer world affecting your personal story in your single player campaign.

Devil May Cry 5

The fifth instalment of the main Devil May Cry series is set after the events of Devil May Cry 4 and 2, following the disappearance of Dante from the real world. Nero now has his own demon slaying branch and must fend off against demons yet again when an ancient and demonic tree takes root in Red Grave City. Devil May Cry 5 has both Nero and a visibly aged Dante as playable characters, and also introduces us to Nico, a friend of Nero’s, and the mind behind the cybernetic prosthetics that he wields.

The Division 2

The Division 2 takes place seven months after the first game and takes place on the brink of a civil war between survivors of the green poison. This time around the game is set in Washington D.C which is on the brink of collapse with lawlessness and instability threatening society. All active Division agents have been sent to the city to reclaim it before it’s too late.

Days Gone

Days Gone is the upcoming post-apocalyptic survival game from Bend Studio. Set in the Pacific Northwest two years after a global pandemic, patched MC member Deacon St. John finds himself in the midst of a devastated world where most of the remaining population are mindless zombie-like creatures known as ‘freakers’. Deacon doesn’t stay in one place too long, so you will get to explore the game’s open world as he drifts from place to place on his motorcycle carrying out bounty hunting and mercenary work.

Rage 2

Nine years after Rage (2010), id Software have teamed up with Avalanche Studios to bring a sequel set 30 years after the original game. Players will assume control of Walker, a ranger born in the post-apocalyptic world, who must fight to survive against the mutants who now inhabit earth. Vehicular combat will be featured in the game, with the ability to drive every vehicle you see as well as a cast of both new and existing characters.

Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled

In December last year, PlayStation Access presenter Hollie Bennett tweeted a picture of a pair of furry orange dice that had mysteriously arrived at her house. It didn’t take long for rumours to start floating around, and then two days later at the Game Awards there was an announcement. In celebration of its 20^th anniversary, a remaster of Crash Team Racing (1999) was being made! Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled will be completely remade from the ground up with new content including new tracks, customisable karts, and online tracks.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan

The developer behind Until Dawn (2015), Supermassive Games is returning this year with a brand-new cinematic horror experience. Man of Medan is the first title in a series of standalone horror games that follows the story of four young adults and the terror they experience after a holiday of a lifetime doesn’t quite go to plan when they find themselves trapped on a ghost ship. The number of games in the anthology is yet to be confirmed but the studio is so far committed to making at least four games, each exploring a different story in a different sub-genre of horror.

Twin Mirror

Dontnod Entertainment is teaming up with Bandai Namco to create a new three-episode psychological thriller. The story will focus on Sam who after attending his best friend’s funeral, wakes up to his clothing mysteriously covered in blood. Through interacting with objects and people around him, Sam navigates between the real world and his surreal mind palace to piece together what happened. Accompanying him along the way is The Double, his alter ego which is a manifestation of the inner voice that lies within him who could either aid or harm his investigation.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

The last time Fire Emblem was on a home console was in 2007 when Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn was released on Wii. Since then, the series has lived exclusively on the DS. The new game, Fire Emblem: Three Houses is the 16^th main title in the series and will bring with it a brand-new adventure and new strategic twists to battles.

Skull & Bones

We all loved captaining The Jackdaw in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (2013), and following the release of Rare’s Sea of Thieves last year Ubisoft have jumped on the pirate bandwagon and are releasing an open world naval warfare game of their own. Skull & Bones allows players to create their own pirate captain and sail the Indian Ocean in a single player campaign or as part of an online team to take part in the Disputed Waters mode.

Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2 will be set 15 years after the events of the first game in a new dark age where society is more danger to itself than the hordes of zombies are. There’ll be plenty of parkour and zombies to kill but this time around the zombies will be swept away during the day and will mostly come out at night. Player choices will also have real effects and will push the story down different paths depending on your choices.

Pokémon

Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Eevee! (2018) were the first Pokémon games to be released on Switch but it wasn’t quite enough to satisfy long time fans who are desperately waiting on a new core game. While we know very little about the next game, we do know it’s coming sometime this year and will follow in the footsteps of Pokémon X and Y (2013) and Pokémon Sun and Moon (2016).
