With just a few weeks until American soul performers The Three Degrees hits the stage in venues across the country, the band are excited to be returning to Wiltshire and performing an intimate gig.
The Philadelphian three-piece will be making their first stop at the Viva in Blackpool to entertain audiences with their well-known repertoire of hits they have sang over the years. Performing in such venues as the Riviera in Las Vegas and the Copacabana in New York, the line-up of Valerie Holiday, Helen Scott and Freddie Pool are looking forward to playing to the smaller crowd.
Mrs Holiday, speaking on playing smaller venues such as Melksham Assembly Hall in Wiltshire, said: “It is different but as much as we enjoy big venues, there is more interaction in smaller venues. You can actually see faces and it’s more personable. But we look for the best in every venue, big or small and plan our show accordingly.”
“I think Swindon is in Wiltshire and we played there last year. In fact, we stayed a week there and used it as a base for towns and cities within easy driving distance.”
Since forming in 1963, the band have endured changes to the members and touring across the world as well as hitting the charts in the UK and the US.
“The best time for the group was in the 70’s because everything was so new and exciting to us. It was a lot of fun because we got go places and do things we had never done before. But, to be honest, we still enjoy what we are doing and that is what keeps us going so we have been lucky,” added Mrs Holiday.
Fans of the Three Degrees are being told to look forward to the set list which boasts a selection of their hits as well a few surprises.
“We include many of our hits obviously – ‘When Will I See You Again?’, ‘Dirty Ol’ Man’ and many more. But we also include songs from our latest album ‘Strategy – Our Tribute To Philadelphia’ such as ‘Strategy’, ‘Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now’ and ‘You’ll Never Find Another Love’. Plus a couple of cover songs and we end up on ‘Boogie Wonderland’, which has taken on a new life with us,” Mrs Holiday said.
Although the show may be aimed at people that have followed the band throughout their career, The Three Degrees have also started to attract new listeners.
When asked if the band sees newer generations attend their shows Mrs Holiday said: “That’s a good and interesting question because we do seem to attract new and younger fans every night. Many have grown up with our songs – their parents played the records or the songs were constantly on radio. I think our songs have mass appeal, the lyrics relate to all age groups. So they know our name and want to check us out.”
