Following previous reports of a fallout with Konami, it was officially confirmed that Hideo Kojima has left the studio and formed a new independent studio and partnered with Sony for a new PlayStation exclusive title.
The award-winning game designer himself confirmed via Twitter that he had left Konami as of December 15th.
“My employment contract with Konami has been terminated as of Dec 15th, so today marks a new start for me,” he wrote. “I’m committed to be involved in creative activities for as long as I live. [I] look forward to what’s coming.”
Kojima’s departure follows reports which surfaced earlier this year of a major fall out with sources claiming Kojima would leave Konami come the end of the year.
Konami previously insisted that Kojima hadn’t left the company and was simply “on vacation”.
More recently, it was alleged that Kojima was prevented from attending the 2015 Game Awards due to orders from lawyers representing Konami.
Shortly following Kojima’s departure announcement, Sony released an announcement video (shown above) revealing the brand new partnership between Sony and Kojima’s new studio – Kojima Productions.
“[Kojima] is one of the most creative talents in the history of games,” said Andrew House, President & CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment.
“All game fans including myself are looking forward [to the new title]”
Kojima added: “I’m thrilled to embark on creating a new franchise with PlayStation that will give you a new and innovative gaming experience.”
In a special interview with IGN, the new title is said to be “slightly more edgy”.
