Blade to join Marvel Cinematic Universe?

While promoting his new television show The Player, Wesley Snipes has come clean about the possibility of Blade, the character that he first played in the 1998 box-office hit Blade, joining The Avengers and the MCU. In an interview with The Huffington Post, Snipes commented:

“That would be interesting. I mean, I know it’s in the comic book. It would be interesting to see where they would place him and where he really would fit in. He’s got to bite somebody. I don’t know who he’s going to bite.”

Though, to be honest, in the comics Blade has never really joined The Avengers. He’s fought alongside various members plenty of times, and joined The Mighty Avengers following The Civil War (which the Marvel Cinematic Universe still has to look forward to) under the moniker Ronin, but in Marvel’s primary series, Blade has never been a member. In the Ultimate comics, though, he did for a time join The Avengers in an attempt to avert a vampire invasion – which I (personally) imagine to be the Marvel Universe’s answer to the Twilight Franchise. The MCU has taken cues from the Ultimate Universe in the past so it’s difficult to say at this point.

It seems that there is always talk of Blade making a return to the MCU, and in many cases rumours suggest that the titular Daywalker may be played by Snipes himself, who last appeared in Blade Trinity in 2004.

“There’s always a possibility, you know. It’s in Marvel’s hands (…) They’re controlling the pace and the flow with that. Conversations have been good.”

Ultimately, however, not even Snipes himself knows as this point.

Other rumours suggest that instead of focussing on Blade himself, any potential Blade movie would in fact focus on his daughter, Fallon Grey, who is (according to Tim Seeley) an “anti-Peter Parker” who comes to realise the difficulties of being “so damn perfect” before she even becomes the a hero.

Ultimately, whatever cinematic future Blade has, his past as a trailblazer for Comic Book Movies cannot be disputed.
