New Rainbow Six: Siege to replace Patriots

Ubisoft has announced Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege will replace Rainbow Six: Patriots.

During the company’s E3 conference, it was revealed the title, in development at Ubisoft Montreal, will be launching in 2015 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

For the first time in the series, players will engage in sieges whilst the Rainbow Six team lead the assault to breach the enemy’s position. Enemies can use reinforced walls and floors, use barbed wire, deployable shields and mines.

“As fans of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six and tactical shooters in general, we set out to create the game we always wanted to play within the counter-terrorism universe, said Xavier Marquis, Creative Director at Ubisoft.

“We asked ourselves ‘how could we capture the incredible tension and unique tactics of these confrontations?’ We found the answer in the Siege gameplay and procedural destruction.

“Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege is the game that fans have been waiting for, and first-person shooter players will be drawn to its unique gameplay.”

The announcement left confusion with gamers as another Rainbow Six game was already in production, called: Rainbow Six: Patriots.

It was later confirmed to Polygon that Patriots has officially been cancelled and Siege will be taking its place.

Rainbow Six brand director, Alexandre Remy, told the site: “It’s not in development anymore. The main decision was some months after Patriots was announced in 2011 that was the first moment we knew the first generation of new consoles were coming.

“So obviously at that moment and for a franchise such as Rainbow we needed to decide if we could make something for next-gen and we were already pretty advanced in the development Patriots.”
