The 2014 Oscar nominations have been revealed, with 12 Years A Slave and American Hustle selected for many of the potential awards.
Both films are nominated for Best Picture, alongside Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Gravity, Her, Nebraska, Philomena and The Wolf of Wall Street.
Chiwetel Ejiofor and Christian Bale have both been nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role for their roles in both films respectively. Other actors hoping to win this award are Bruce Dern (Nebraska), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street) and Golden Globe winner Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club).
Amy Adams will fight it out for her first Best Actress Oscar for her role in American Hustle, a category in which she is the only actress not to have previously won an Oscar. She will be up against Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), Sandra Bullock (Gravity), Judi Dench (Philomena) and Meryl Streep (August: Osage County) who have all previously won Oscars for the films The Aviator, The Blind Side, Shakespeare in Love and Kramer vs. Kramer/Sophie’s Choice/The Iron Lady.
Jared Leto is the favourite for the Supporting Actor award, for his role as a transgender woman in Dallas Buyers Club, after winning the Golden Globe. He’s nominated alongside Bradley Cooper (American Hustle), Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street), Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave) and Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips).
Hollywood girl of the moment Jennifer Lawrence is likely to pick up her second Oscar for her Supporting Role as the eccentric Rosalyn Rosenfeld in American Hustle. Battling it out in this category are Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine), Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave), Julia Roberts (August: Osage County) and June Squibb (Nebraska).
Probably the most successful Disney film since The Lion King, Frozen is a firm favourite to win Best Animated Feature Film. It shares this category with The Croods, Despicable Me 2, Ernest and Celestine and The Wind Rises.
David O’Russell and Steve McQueen will battle it out for Best Director for American Hustle and 12 Years a Slave, although Gravity director Alfonso Cuaron beat them both at the Golden Globes, so this one is a tough one to call. The three men are also up against Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street) and Alexander Payne (Nebraska).
Other categories announced earlier today were Best Documentary, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Original Score and Best Original Screenplay.
The awards will take place on March 2nd 2014, and will be hosted by Ellen DeGeneres. The full list of nominations can be found below:
