Golden Globes Awards 2014 – The Winners

The Golden Globes took place at the weekend, and it was a great night for directors Steve McQueen and David O’Russell, as their films 12 Years A Slave and American Hustle won some of the most weighty gongs of the night.

The females of O’Russell’s American Hustle faired well, with both Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence picking up best actress/supporting actress awards for their performances in the film, whilst the film itself won Best Musical or Comedy Motion Picture. However, Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper both lost out on their nominated categories to Leonardo DiCaprio and Jared Leto, who won for their performances in The Wolf of Wall Street and Dallas Buyers Club.

McQueen picked up the award for Best Drama Picture, whilst Alfonso Cuaron picked up the coveted Best Director award for the stunning sci-fi film Gravity. Cate Blanchett took home the gong for Best Actress in a Drama Motion Picture, for her role in the Woody Allen film Blue Jasmine. Allen himself was absent from the ceremony, but was awarded the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award.

Spike Jonze triumphed in the Best Screenplay category, for his adaptation of Her, whilst The Great Beauty won Best Foreign Language. Disney’s musical adventure Frozen won Best Animated Film, whilst Alex Ebert was awarded Best Original Score for All Is Lost. Irish band U2 were also winners, receiving praise for their Original Song “Ordinary Love”, featured in the film Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom.

Breaking Bad won Best Drama Series, with Bryan Cranston also winning Best Drama Actor. Robin Wright was named Best Drama Actress for House of Cards, with host Amy Poehler winning Best Musical or Comedy Actress for her role in Parks and Recreation. Brooklyn Nine-Nine also faired well, winning Best Musical or Comedy Series, and Andy Samberg for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Series.

Liberace biopic Behind The Candelabra was named Best Miniseries or Movie, with Michael Douglas picking up the Best Actor in a Miniseries or Movie award. Elisabeth Moss won Best Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for her part in Top of the Lake, with British actress Jacqueline Bisset winning Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for drama Dancing on the Edge. Jon Voight picked up the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie for his role in Ray Donavon.

The Golden Globes were hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler for the second year, and the winners are hotly tipped as Oscar favourites.
