[dropcap]C[/dropcap]all of Duty: Ghosts has sold more than $1 billion into retail for its much anticipated release on Tuesday, according to Activision.
In a press release, the company announced that the new instalment of the first-person action shooter also became GameStop’s most pre-ordered next generation game and, according to Microsoft, has become number one most played game on Xbox Live.
They also confirmed that Ghosts has averaged player sessions much longer than previous instalments such as Black Ops II and Modern Warfare 3 on the Xbox 360 during the same time period of each release.
Commenting on the figure, CEO of Activision Blizzard, Bobby Kotick, confidently said: “Call of Duty is by far the largest console franchise of this generation. More people have played Call of Duty this year than ever before, logging four billion hours of gameplay.
“In the last 12 months, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, including its digital content, generated more revenues than any other console game ever has in a single year. Although it is too early to assess sell-through for Call of Duty: Ghosts, it’s launching at a time when the franchise has never been more popular.”
Activision Publishing CEO, Eric Hirshberg, congratulated developers Infinity Ward for its hard work, saying: “Ghosts is an amazing game which ushers in the next generation of Call of Duty. The team at Infinity Ward has delivered yet another epic thrill ride in the campaign, and what I think is our best multiplayer game yet.
“This is the must have launch title for the next generation of consoles, and we expect Call of Duty: Ghosts to be the most successful launch for the Xbox One and PS4 by a wide margin,” he concluded.
However, the $1 billion sold into retail stores does not account for actual sales. Sales figures for the first day of sales for Ghosts are yet to be released.
Last month, Activision’s UK Senior Brand Manager, Kevin Flynn, said that the company was looking forward to retaining all the records they once held before Grand Theft Auto V swiped all of them following their release on September 17th.
GTA V sold more than $800 million in sales on day one and broke $1 billion two days later. It also broke seven Guinness World Records, beat Last of Us as the biggest digital release on the PlayStation Network and outsold its predecessor GTA IV in units sold.
Take Two confirmed earlier this month that GTA V had shipped 29 million units. It was also awarded Game of the Year at the recent Golden Joystick Awards.
Call of Duty: Ghosts is now available for the PS3, Xbox 360, PC and Wii U. The PS4 version launches on November 29th and November 22nd for Xbox One.
