[dropcap]A[/dropcap] female version of the Expendables (currently known as The Expendabelles) is still in the pipeline, and it’s a great idea for an action movie. There are plenty of tough female action heroines in Hollywood who could make a film like this very entertaining.
The producer of the Expendables movies Avi Lerner is developing the project, and Cameron Diaz, Milla Jovovich and Meryl Streep are all rumoured to be in talks to star in the film according to Deadline. Streep is not known for action roles, and if she appears in the movie it would be truly inspired casting. Diaz has starred in films with action before, and Jovovich is probably best known as an action heroine for her role in the Resident Evil flicks. Hopefully all three actresses will sign up for the project, as it would be amazing to see them working together.
Former MMA fighter Gina Carano from Haywire and Katee Sackhoff from Battlestar Galactica have apparently already been cast in the film, which is good news. Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Yeoh, Linda Hamilton, Michelle Rodriguez and former martial arts actress Cynthia Rothrock would also all be great casting choices for the female Expendables – plus, it’ll be interesting to see who is cast as the main villain…
Lerner mentioned in an interview with Bulgaria’s Standart that the studio is looking for a female director to join the project. Kathryn Bigelow or Lexi Alexander (Punisher: War Zone) could possibly take on that role, as both have experience with the genre. Legally Blonde writers Karen McCullah and Kirsten Smith have signed up to write the script.
There is no release date for the film yet, but interested action fans should look out for it.
