X-Men director Bryan Singer, whose latest film X-Men: Days of Future Past is being released in a few weeks, has been accused of drugging and raping a teenage boy in 1999. Michael Egan, then an aspiring actor, is suing the director for damages on the grounds of intentional infliction of emotional distress, battery, assault and invasion of privacy by unreasonable intrusion.
Singer is being accused of sexually abusing and raping Michael Egan on multiple occasions, as well as drugging and raping him on at least one occasion in 1999, when Egan was 17. Egan also alleges that Singer was part of a group of Hollywood men who used their money and power to intimidate and abuse boys and young men. This group is also said to have included Marc Collins-Rector, founder of Digital Entertainment Network, who Egan also alleges repeatedly raped him. Collins-Rector has already had charges brought against him for transporting minors across state lines for sexual purposes, and is now a registered sex offender.
Singer has had lawsuits filed against him in the past by the parents of teenage extras in his film Apt Pupil, who claimed their children were coerced into taking their clothes off for the camera. These cases were thrown out after it became apparent that they were probably just an attempt by lawyers to make some easy money playing on homophobic attitudes, and that Singer had very little interaction with the extras in question. Unfortunately the case being brought against him now, if proved to be true, is a lot more damning.
Singer is openly gay, and (if you pay attention to the grindings of the Hollywood gossip mill) his preference for the company of men much younger than himself is well documented. Being a bit of a sleazebag is certainly not a crime, but it’s also certainly not going to work in his favour here. Singer denies the allegations and plans to countersue. Here are some words from his lawyer, Marty Singer: “The claims made against Bryan Singer are completely without merit…We are very confident that Bryan will be vindicated in this absurd and defamatory lawsuit.”
He also said “It is obvious that this case was filed in an attempt to get publicity at the time when Bryan’s new movie is about to open in a few weeks.”
