[dropcap]F[/dropcap]ox studios have confirmed that popular director James Cameron will direct three Avatar sequels instead of just two. The first Avatar film (released in 2009) was a mega hit and fans have been eagerly awaiting news regarding the sequels. The films will be directed simultaneously next year, and then rather like Lord of the Rings each film will be released at Christmas time from 2016-2018.
There are no details about the films yet but Fox also hired four new screenwriters to help write them. Cameron always intended to direct more Avatar movies and fans are guaranteed an epic saga with amazing special effects. Cameron made a statement to Variety magazine saying: “In writing the new films, I’ve come to realize that Avatar’s world, story and characters have become even richer than I anticipated.”
It’s common for studios to extend their big blockbuster movies these days; Peter Jackson’s Hobbit series was originally intended to be just two films but then later became three instead. Fans have some epic films to look forward to in the future with Avatar, Star Wars and The Avengers all getting sequels.
Hopefully the director has a vision big enough to sustain three more films. The story in the first Avatar was fairly simple so the scriptwriters will have their work cut out trying to create enough material for the sequels. Cameron is a reliable director so there is good reason to be optimistic about the future of the series.
