The original Evil Dead movie became an instant cult hit when it was released in 1981. Sam Raimi and his crew created a fun horror film on a shoe string budget. The success of the film also motivated Raimi to release two sequels, Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness. Now Sam Raimi returns as a producer for this new Evil Dead which is a remake of the first movie. The star of the original movies Bruce Campbell also returns as a producer while newcomer Fede Alvarez takes on the role of director.
The story is very simple, five twenty-somethings travel to a remote cabin to drink, get merry and have a good time. Eric (played by Lou Taylor Pucci) discovers a strange book in the cellar and begins to read from it. Unfortunately this awakens demons from the surrounding forest and they start to terrorize the group. One of the young women, Mia (Jane Levy) is possessed by a demon and then tries to kill the others. The surviving members of the group fight to avoid being killed or possessed and attempt to find a way to banish the demons. The road leading to the cabin also becomes blocked so there is nowhere to run.
This film should delight horror fans with its shocking violence and grim atmosphere. The original Evil Dead films didn’t take themselves too seriously but this new remake looks very serious indeed.
The woods seem to be alive with menace as the youngsters try to escape the evil they have unleashed. The make up effects are nice too and it looks like the director has avoided using an over-abundance of CGI effects which is refreshing. The actors look convincing and possessed Mia has a crazy, deranged look in her yellow eyes that sends a shiver down the spine!
The film should have plenty of jump scares and enough shocks to make every viewer sleep with the lights on.
Evil Dead is released on April 19th so check it out.
