Our Trailer Review:
J.J. Abrams returns to the science fiction movie genre with a trailer for his new Star Trek sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness.
Captain Kirk (played again by Chris Pine) and his crew must pit their wits against a new enemy in this sequel to the 2009 Star Trek reboot. The trailer begins with a moody introduction that gives the impression this sequel may have a darker tone than its predecessor. The trailer is narrated by a sinister character who gives an ominous warning to Kirk and his crew that their world is not as safe as they believe. This mysterious antagonist also talks about his unexpected return and quest for vengeance. Kirk’s new adversary is played by the well known British actor Benedict Cumberbatch. His name is not mentioned but he appears to have a score to settle with Kirk and his crew.
Another new character is also revealed at around the 00:18 mark. The character is a blonde female (played by Alice Eve from the movie Crossing Over) with a smart appearance. She is seen talking to Kirk and appears again towards the end of the trailer.
Some of Captain Kirk’s other crew members are also shown in peril such as Zoe Saldana’s Uhura and Zachary Quinto’s Spock. The Enterprise itself is briefly shown a few times during the trailer although it doesn’t appear to have much prominence.
The trailer is full of spectacle and it is clear that the heroes will be tested by this new adversary. The fact that the film appears to have a darker, moody edge to it could be a good thing. It would also indicate that JJ Abrams is trying to make a sequel that is very different in theme and tone to the first movie. The film should provide ample amounts of drama, action and intrigue when it is released next year.
