Gina Carano. Does the name sound familiar? Well it soon will as Gina has become the first female Expendable to sign on the dotted line.
We all have our favourite female action stars, and as soon as news reached Farm HQ that the female Expendables was a go, the speculation began. Now it seems that one who wasn’t on our list has become the first to sign up for duty.
Gina Carano is a name that not many of us have come across. However, fans of MMA will be all too aware of the hard-hitting, spin-kicking actress. Born April 16th 1982, Carano was introduced to the world of Muay Thai by her then boyfriend. She became an immediate success and an instant fan favourite. The brunette was soon starring in Ring Girls, a film documenting the travels of five women all vying to become the best Muay Thai fighter in the world.
Next came Gladiators. No, not the camp British version, but the brutal American style one (no pantomime Wolf in their incarnation). As ‘Crush’, she knocked out contenders and added even more fans to her growing collection. There seemed to be only one logical place for her, Hollywood.
Steven Soderbergh cast her in the action packed Haywire; she starred opposite Channing Tatum and Ewan McGregor as a covert operative. Other roles soon followed, including in In the Blood, and she is due to appear alongside Vin Diesel in Fast and Furious 6. It seems almost inevitable that she would be cast in ‘The Expendables – Venus Edition’.
“I don’t know how I’m supposed to make a movie that is supposed to be the female version of The Expendables without Gina Carano in it,” producer Adi Shankar recently told Variety. “It would be like making Twix without caramel or Jamba Juice without Jamba.”
There’s still a lack of news as to who will be joining Gina, although we have our ideas…The ball now seems to be well and truly rolling, so with any luck, we won’t have to wait too much longer. Fingers crossed.
