Ghostbusters has everything that makes 80’s movies great; fun storyline, great theme song, brilliant special effects and an entertaining cast. If you’ve somehow missed Ghostbusters (shame on you), the storyline is simple – after losing their jobs, three scientists hone their ghost capturing equipment and begin a business venture that brings them face to face with ghosts and ghouls.
The Ghostbusters, Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Ackroyd) and Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), are an enjoyable combination to watch. Egon and Ray compete against Venkman’s womanising laziness to try and forge business whilst Ray’s loveable determination plays out well on screen. After drumming up serious media interest, as well as meeting the infamous Slimer for the first time, the trio are met with a slightly trickier case when Sigourney Weaver comes knocking.
Housing a portal to a terrifying dimension in her fridge, Weaver’s Dana must fight to convince the Ghostbusters of her problem. Having to contend with the amorous affections of a besotted neighbour and Venkman himself, Dana soon finds herself possessed by an evil other-worldy being that poses a threat not only to the Ghostbusters, but to the city itself. Before fighting the new nemesis, the Ghostbusters, now with the addition of newbie Winston, must fight off the law, too.
Written by Ackroyd and Ramis, Ghostbusters masterfully mixes witty humour with visual gags whilst bringing infamous sequences to screen. The opening librarian shot was fabulously ‘sweded’ in Be Kind, Rewind, whilst the appearance of a giant Stay Puft marshmallow man is a cinema classic.
What other film could make a wailing old ambulance cool? One of the best films of the 80’s (if you don’t believe us, here’s proof), Ghostbusters answers that age-old question… who ya gonna call… ?
Best ghost: Slimer.
Best song: The theme song.
