After all the will-he-won’t-he shenanigans concerning what will now be Daniel Craig’s final outing as 007, you’d think that finding a director for the 25th Bond movie might be a relative walk in the park. Well, think again, because after being heavily-linked to the gig, Denis Villeneuve has officially pulled out.
And with the film scheduled for release in 2019, it’s clear that Barbara Brocolli and Michael G Wilson at EON Productions need to get moving – and fast.
As little as a month ago, things were looking up. Villeneuve himself had said “that for me to do a Bond movie would be a deep, deep pleasure”. With that, the cameras were going to start rolling in the New Year, although to be fair to the Blade Runner 2049 director, he had always maintained that he couldn’t add too much to the speculation. One thing for sure is that he could definitely deliver the eye-popping visuals that many thought were sadly lacking in Spectre.
Sadly for Bond fans, it transpires that Villeneuve was already heavily committed to the Dune remake. It was also disclosed that he was Craig’s number one choice, so this really would have been the stuff EON have been dreaming of, especially given Villeneuve’s partnership with eminent cinematographer Roger Deakins.
But it’s not all bad news, as the French-Canadian hasn’t ruled himself out of Her Majesty’s Secret Service in the future: “I would love to work with Daniel and a Bond movie for me would be a treat. It’s a matter of timing, I guess.” Unfortunately, the curtain will have come down on Craig’s 007 career after this next chapter (and he definitely means it this time), but a man of Villeneuve’s talents would be able to make it work whoever takes up the reins for the 26th edition.
In the meantime, a November 2019 premiere for number 25 looks far from certain. Who do you think should direct? Let us know in the comments section.
