The summer season is setting in and Preacher is finally back. The first season of the show premiered in 2016 on AMC and Amazon Prime Video after being viewed as religiously controversial by other executives and producers. The pilot episode was directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and stars Dominic Cooper.
Having watched the first season without knowing much about the show’s plot or even knowing that the show was based on a comic book, I was delightfully surprised at how fast the show was able to pull me in. If you haven’t been able to catch up on the first season, don’t worry because the second season is really where all the fun will start to kick in. The first season served as sort of a backstory for the characters and set up what the main focus of the show was, so it won’t be hard to keep up with the plot of the second season.
An adaptation of the comic book series Preacher, this series centres around Jesse Custer (Cooper), a Texas preacher who is chosen to carry the offspring of what would happen when an angel and a demon procreate. This offspring is referred to as Genesis and gives Jesse godlike abilities. Along with his girlfriend (Ruth Negga) and a vampire (Joseph Gilgun), Jesse (Cooper) goes on a search to find God. The new season picks up just after Jesse (Cooper) learns that God is missing and he sets off to find him.
The reason that Preacher was able to pull me in so fast was because of its characters and its willingness to take on such a controversial topic. As a preacher, Jesse (Cooper) deals with his faith which is a very relatable issue. His girlfriend, Tulip (Negga), is a take no crap southern black woman who became my favourite character of the show from the first episode. And Jesse’s friend, Cassidy (Gilgun), is an Irish vampire who struggles with addictions. The various characters even down to minor characters like Eugene “Arseface” Root (Ian Colletti) and their backstories are what makes the series so interesting. If it wasn’t for the actors and their ability to bring these characters to life, then Preacher as a television show would have only been an interesting idea. It couldn’t have been fully realised for what it is, which is a show that not only makes the characters question everything that they ever knew, but the audience as well.
Die-hard fans of the comic book and the series will enjoy this season because it will feature more action and more colourful characters. So grab your popcorn because you’re going to be in for a good time.
