Hard to believe it has been a whole year since we last saw Bray Wyatt live and in person on our TV screens, which came a few months ahead of his tragic passing last August. It is a loss that shook the wrestling world, and one still sorely felt on WWE TV, backstage, and in the hearts of so many fans and friends. Wyatt was a creative genius, one of a kind talent and character that left an indelible imprint on the WWE landscape. So, in occasion of it being one year on from his last onscreen TV appearance, we celebrate the man’s greatest matches. In this final segment, Bray and Uncle Howdy arrived in the ring to attack Hit Row to rapturous chants of “Thank You Bray”, and to challenge either Brock Lesnar or – as was intended for WrestleMania 39 – Bobby Lashley, in what was, looking back, a perfect reflection of the man’s charisma, aura and love in WWE. We never got to see where this final character was leading but were, are and will always be fireflies forever. Thank You Bray!

vs. John Cena (Steel Cage Match, Extreme Rules 2014)
After losing a battle for Cena’s soul at WrestleMania XXX Wyatt would get a win over the Leader of the Cenation at the exemplary Extreme Rules 2014 and in a Steel Cage no less. This match was another good tussle between the two and true the haunted choir child assisted ending rubbed some up the wrong way but Wyatt’s deserved victory over Cena was much needed and welcome and let this feud keep on burning!

vs. AJ Styles vs. John Cena (Triple Threat Smackdown 14/02/17)
An often forgotten WWE Championship defence for Wyatt in his all too brief time as WWE Champion, this match was an underseen gem, with all three talents putting on a fast moving display and with Wyatt moving ahead to WrestleMania 33 with momentum and a win over two of the biggest stars of the blue brand and of WWE, heck, in all of wrestling!
- 18/20
vs. Roman Reigns (Hell in a Cell match, Hell in a Cell 2015)
Roman is inevitable but Wyatt got a nice win over him at that year’s Battleground event in a cracking match, though perhaps the best Reigns/Wyatt showdown for many would come inside Hell in a Cell at the brilliant 2015 event that used satan’s structure as its namesake. This match was inventive in some of its spots, brutal, and was a nice finale to the Wyatt and Roman saga.
- 17/20
vs. John Cena (WrestleMania XXX)
Bray Wyatt should have gone over here, as was the case all too often in his career, but even in defeat he left us with no illusion that his character would be one of the most compelling on WWE going forward. This match, from Wyatt’s live entrance onwards, was a psychologically-driven head trip as the leader of the Wyatt family would try to break John Cena and force him to do the unthinkable to vanquish this new face of fear. Naturally John did not, and Wyatt lost the battle, but not, as we shall later on, see the war!
- 16/20
vs. Roman Reigns (Battleground 2015)
Ah the aforementioned Battleground. And Wyatt’s win over the now Tribal Chief. Even back in 2015, a win over Roman was pretty massive and Wyatt’s victory, with an assist from the late great Luke Harper, was a superb jumping off point for this compelling clash of styles and personalities. “Anyone but you Roman”…
- 15/20
vs. Kane (Backlash 2016)
Wyatt and Kane had a long history in WWE, clashing numerous times over the years, from Wyatt’s Ring of Fire match debut at Summerslam 2013, to The Brothers of Destruction vs. The Wyatt Family showdown at Survivor Series 2015, but for my money their best encounter went down at the superb Backlash 2016 event. Initially a bout with Randy Orton was planned but the eater of Worlds took him out beforehand, leading to a fiery replacement and this No Holds Barred match was a hard hitting and monstrous affair, and a great battle between these two. As Wyatt would fall to The Devil’s Favourite Demon, thanks to some RKO interference!
- 14/20
vs. LA Knight (Pitch Black Match, Royal Rumble 2023)
It may be controversial but the legacy of this match and feud cannot be denied. The Mountain Dew promotion was ill-placed of course but this unique match up now stands as Bray Wyatt’s last ever PPV match, as well as one of the last big signifiers we had of where the Uncle Howdy and Wyatt characters were heading. Not only that, but in this feud, LA Knight would truly become the megastar he is today and amidst all this, The Undertaker passed the torch to Bray on RAW XXX. This whole programme was vital to WWE as we now know it and this night marked so many exciting things to come for Wyatt’s new character, which we shall sadly never see come to life, but as last event’s go, the Lights Out match was a signifier of all Bray was. Creative, original and always compelling.

vs. Kevin Owens (Smackdown 09/10/23)
One of the more overlooked matches from 'The Fiend' Bray Wyatt, this Smackdown showdown with Kevin Owens really deserved to have been on PPV and was a fantastic showing from both men. Back and forth, and with some really interesting counters and moments, this was a Fiend match that should have led to a feud but even as a one-off battle, seeing KO go toe-to-toe with Bray’s most evil form was awesome.
- 12/20
vs. Seth Rollins (Falls Count Anywhere Match, Crown Jewel 2019)
On Halloween night, how appropriate it was that 'The Fiend' Bray Wyatt would win the Universal Championship. Seth Rollins and Bray arguably never got that one on one match they both would call perfect but this match was the nearest to it. Far better booked than their Hell in a Cell match, this gave the crowd what they wanted in a fiendish new champion and delivered a red lit spectacle for the Saudi Arabian crowd.
- 11/20
Team SmackDown vs. Team Raw (Survivor Series 2016)
Bray and Randy emerged as soul Survivors in one of the finest Smackdown vs Raw Survivor Series matches. Not only did this lead nicely to the pair’s tag team ventures but would be an appropriate high point in their long running feud that ran to and through WrestleMania 33.
- 10/20
vs. Randy Orton (Firefly Inferno Match, TLC 2020)
Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt have had a hectic history, with many matches that worked ok, many that did not quite click and a few that went off the rails completely. However, this Thunderdome era match at TLC 2020 was Orton and Bray’s best ever match together. Taking the Inferno match and making very creative use of it, this bout between The Fiend and Randy was visually inventive, endlessly creative and came with daredevil closing match scenes that wowed, as well as a post-match moment that lit up the conversations the next day.
- 9/20
vs. Daniel Bryan (Survivor Series 2019)
Every time Bray and Bryan got together you could guarantee magic would happen, and this Universal Championship match was no exception. Contested under the red lights, this match between Daniel and The Fiend was electrifying. Bryan fought the odds to take out his monstrous opponent but despite his best efforts would fall to The Fiend’s grasp, in the first match of their outstanding 2019-20 Universal Championship feud.
- 8/20
vs. The Undertaker (WrestleMania 31)
The Undertaker’s respect for Bray Wyatt is well noted and it was clear that there was no better opponent for him to face at some point at WrestleMania. And while many had hoped for Sting (who bafflingly lost to HHH on the same night), Taker and Bray had a wonderful clash of the old and new faces of fear in this battle. Competing with a broken ankle, Bray delivered a psychological slow burner with The Deadman, and after Taker’s Streak-breaking letdown the year before, Wyatt unselfishly brought Taker back in this match, and the two had a memorable battle at a memorable WrestleMania.
- 7/20
vs. Finn Balor (Summerslam 2019)
Bray Wyatt and Finn Balor have clashed many times before but, strange as it is to say, this short match at SummerSlam 2019 was probably their most memorable outing, as it was the debut match for The Fiend character. After months of vignettes and build, Bray Wyatt delivered the greatest character in wrestling since the likes of Taker, Kane and Mankind. The audience were in absolute awe of what they saw, and as Finn was destroyed by The Fiend, we all knew we had witnessed one of the greatest character debuts in the history of the business.
- 6/20
vs. John Cena (Last Man Standing Match, Payback 2014)
This acclaimed Last Man Standing match would end the 2014 feud between Cena and Wyatt, and while big match John would get the ultimate win, Wyatt certainly looked every bit the star he was on that stage with Cena. This was a bruising battle, with all the trimmings and won great acclaim from some of the wrestling publications that normally would relish in knocking Wyatt, and was certainly one of many showpiece matches in the young man’s building career.
- 5/20
vs. Daniel Bryan (Royal Rumble 2014)
On a night that changed the WWE for the better, despite the worst happening, Bryan and Wyatt shone. This show lives on in infamy for many reasons but on this card, the greatest gleaming jewel is this red hot opener between Daniel Bryan and Bray Wyatt. Paying off their incredible programme, this match was heart racing and incredible, with Wyatt scoring the victory and having a tonne of momentum in the process, In the night the Yes Movement was born, Wyatt’s match and feud with Bryan was the sparks of that movement’s beginnings. Some still call this Bray’s greatest ever match. And in terms of the Rumble itself, Bray would one year later steal the show in the 2015 Royal Rumble Match itself!
- 4/20
Wyatt Family vs. The Shield (Elimination Chamber 2014)
This battle of the factions had to be seen to be believed. Bray Wyatt, Erik Rowan and Luke Harper faced Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins in a showdown that has to be one of the dark horse choices for best ever faction battles in WWE history. From the moment these two very different and dominant groups came face to face we knew we were in for something great and on this show, they stole the show, with a six man thriller that showcased everybody to the maximum, and which saw the Wyatts emerge victorious over one of the most dominant groups in WWE history.
- 3/20
vs. AJ Styles vs. John Cena vs. Baron Corbin vs. Dean Ambrose vs. The Miz (Elimination Chamber Match, Elimination Chamber 2017)
Against AJ Styles, John Cena, Baron Corbin, Dean Ambrose and The Miz, Bray Wyatt made history, and for this glorious night the era of Wyatt was upon us and the fireflies shone brighter than ever. This very cool Elimination Chamber victory showed us that Bray Wyatt was in the main event scene fully and was on the road to WrestleMania. Many now call this one of the most feel good moments in recent WWE history, as Bray accomplished what so many have not. He was WWE Champion and all that talent and hard work had paid off. He was the man!
- 2/20
vs. John Cena (Firefly Funhouse Match, WrestleMania 36 Night #2)
In his only WrestleMania victory (a fact that is really rather sad), Bray Wyatt at a time of worldwide despair gave us something to talk about and relish, and one of the greatest cinematic matches in wrestling history. The Firefly Funhouse match between he and Cena was literally a perfect deconstruction of character, legacy and rivalry. A psychological, disturbing, fun and creative piece of wrestling art and storytelling, which showed that Bray was not only a creative mind unlike any other but a wrestling visionary. The Fiend mentally and emotionally took Cena apart, before ending him decisively and dominantly in a match that single handedly saved and reinvented Bray Wyatt’s character after the potentially career destroying Goldberg match the month prior. What Cena and Wyatt produced on this night was a classic, that made the very best out of an unenviable situation faced.
- 1/20
vs. Daniel Bryan (Strap Match, Royal Rumble 2020)
In my opinion, this Universal Championship strap match between The Fiend Bray Wyatt and Daniel Bryan is not only the greatest strap match in wrestling history but Bray Wyatt’s greatest match of his incredible, meaningful and beloved career. The Fiend character faced many challenges in some of the booking decisions thrown his way but Bray always kept rolling, but this mighty feud with Daniel Bryan was phenomenal all round, and this match was a welt inducing, bruising, thrilling man vs monster battle that told a perfect story of an unstoppable dark champion and an unbreakable noble warrior. This was a sickening, exhilarating and hard hitting match that could have gone any way, and was the last great moment in such an underrated title run for Bray. A match that still amazes in its wince-inducing ferocity and heart racing drama. A masterpiece from to master craftsman.
