The first trailer for the 7th Generation of Pokemon games, Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon, has been released on the official Pokemon YouTube Channel with a release scheduled for 18th November 2016.
The trailer, the first since the games were announced back in February, reveals a few details including the new region, the three starters and the two mascot legendaries.
The region, known as Alola, confirms the games rumoured tropical setting, with the region’s buildings and other aesthetic choices across the trailer hinting at inspiration being taken from Hawaii and the Pacific Islands.
The three starters also get to demonstrate their power after upon introduction from a man who may be the region’s professor. The official Pokemon Sun & Moon website gives more details on each starter:
CATEGORY Grass Quill Pokémon HEIGHT 1’00” WEIGHT 3.3 lbs. TYPE Grass/Flying ABILITY Overgrow
Rowlet can attack without making a sound! It flies silently through the skies, drawing near to its opponent without being noticed, and then lashing out with powerful kicks. It can also attack from a distance using the razor-sharp leaves that form part of its feathers.
Similar in apperance to a pygmy owl, it is only the second Pokemon to have the grass/flying typeing (the first being Tropius from Generation 3).
Fire Cat Pokémon HEIGHT 1’04” WEIGHT 9.5 lbs. TYPE Fire ABILITY Blaze
Logical but also passionate, Litten always remains coolheaded and doesn’t show its emotions on the surface.
The red stripes on this black tabby cat could hint at a tiger-like evolution line, finally introducing a tiger pokemon to the games (Raikou is classed as a “Legendary Dog”).
CATEGORY Sea Lion Pokémon HEIGHT 1’04” WEIGHT 16.5 lbs. TYPE Water ABILITY Torrent
Popplio’s swimming speed is known to exceed 25 mph. It’s better at moving in the water than on land. Still, when it’s on land, it takes advantage of the elasticity of its balloons to perform acrobatic stunts and jumps.
This circus sea lion Pokemon is the most themematically fitting of the starters, with aquatics animal shows being very popular in tropical resorts.
While keeping the 3D game design introduced in Generation 6, the human characters seem to have undergone a huge change from a chibi-like design to a tall, slim design that would only be seen in cutscenes in the previous games, although what was shown in the trailer could also be cutscenes. Among the humans seen in the trailer include a potential rival, a mysterious girl and the alternative female design for the player character.
The legendary Pokemon for the games were also revealed but without names or typeings, leading to speculation that they may keep the Japanese names leaked back in April:
Solgaleo (Sun Legendary) – Like the name had suggested, this legendary is a giant yellow lion with a mane resembling the logo for Pokemon Sun. It’s face is seemingly colored like a starfield.
Lunaala (Moon Legendary) – The design of this legendary most resembles a bat and is the more intricate of the two. The edges of its wings resemble the Pokemon Moon logo while the membrane, like Solgaleo’s face, is seemingly coloured like a starfield.
The trailer concludes with the reveal of the release date, 18th November 2016, which has been confirmed on the official Pokemon Twitter as the date the US will receive game. EU fans will get their copies 5 days later on the 23rd.
In the Japanese trailer for the game, released at the same time, a few more details are revealed about the game but it largely followed the story of a Japanese boy moving to Hawaii with his mother and struggling to make friends until he finds their mutual interest in Pokemon. Among the new gameplay footage shown includes a choice of four skin and hair colours for the player character, the reveal of their Mum and the player character picking up their starter Pokemon, as well as some different shots of the region not seen in the English trailer.
