Reports have begun filtering through the internet that Matthew McConaughey, still riding high after the McConaugheyssance (aka his Oscar winning performance in Dallas Buyers Club (2013), space flight in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (2014) and the first – and best – season of True Detective (2014), has been in talks to join the long-awaited adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series of novels. And personally, I couldn’t be happier.
According to The Wrap, producers Ron Howard and Brian Glazer are desperate for the star to appear in their adaptation of King’s 1982 novel. However, while there can be no doubt that McConaughey is being courted for a role in the Sony/MRC adaptation, nobody (probably not even McConaughey) is exactly sure which role it will be. Originally, he was being eyed for The Dark Tower’s protagonist, Roland Deschain. Later reports, however, suggested that he has also eyed the role of The Man in Black, the novel’s antagonist, as he (reportedly) wants to “embrace his dark side”.
McConaughey was previously rumoured to be attached to another King adaptation, The Stand, stated to be released sometime late next year. However, if the rumours of his involvement in The Dark Tower are true then he would likely detach himself from that project in order to free up time and lessen friction between the two projects. It’s interesting to point out, though, that in both The Stand and The Dark Tower McConaughey has been eyed for the same character: Randall Flag AKA The Man in Black. Unlikely as it is, could this potentially lead to a multi-studio cinematic world in the vein of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
At this point, nobody knows, but we’re very excited about the possibility and we will keep you informed.
