Leeds Rhinos produced a stunning display to overcome Hull KR in the challenge cup final. The Rhinos were big favourites before the game, but not many people would have predicted just how one sided the game would turn out. A 50-0 scoreline shows just how dominant they were.
Hull KR went into the game as huge underdogs, not many people gave them a chance of claiming what would only be their second challenge cup trophy. The first success was back in 1980. Victories over Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves on the way to the final made them dangerous opponents, and not to be under estimated.
Leeds Rhinos went into the game as big favourites. They currently sit top of the super league table in the midst of the super 8s. They had their sights set on an unprecedented treble (challenge cup, league leaders shield and super league championship).
The Rhinos got off to the best possible start. In the fifth minute Brett Delaney touched down, with help from the video referee, the try was awarded. Ten minutes later the Rhinos had their second try, this time courtesy of a Danny Mcguire effort. The third try came about after a great team move, which was finished off by winger Tom Briscoe. At half time it was 18-0 to last years cup winners.
Leeds continued to dominate in the second half. Briscoe caught an high ball and raced 90 metres for the Rhinos fourth try of the game. Brad Singleton added to the lead not long after by touching down from close range. It was now 28-0 with just 15 minutes remaining. The game was effectively over.
The Rhinos continued to put points on the board in the final minutes of the game. Briscoe scored his hat trick by touching down in the corner, Rob Burrow then touched the ball down under the posts. Tom Briscoe scored two late tries, and in doing so he became the first man to score five tries in a final at Wembley. 50-0 it ended.
It was a great day for the players and supporters of the Leeds Rhinos. It was a fitting send off in the challenge cup for club legends Kevin Sinfield and Jamie Peacock, who both will leave the club at the end of the season. The first part of the treble is now secure. After that performance, who would dare to bet against them claiming the two trophies that still remain to be won?
As for Hull KR, it was a disappointing result after the promise they had shown leading up to the final. It is now time for them to concentrate on the super 8s, and to make sure of super league survival for next season.
