Sam Mendes, the man behind 2012’s immensely successful Skyfall, has revealed that Spectre (2015) will be his final outing in the James Bond franchise.
In an interview with BBC America, Mendes explained that while he did decide to work on Spectre despite his own reservations, he does believe that it will be his final outing with the Scottish MI6 Officer.
“I said ‘No’ to the last one and then ended up doing it, and was pilloried by all my friends. But I do think this is probably it.”
Mendes, who directed 2012’s Skyfall and its sequel explained that “I don’t think I could go down that road again. You do have to put everything else on hold.”
A quick glance at Mendes’ IMDB page confirms his statement. Since 2012, he has only directed films for the Bond franchise and a production of King Lear at the National Theatre (2014) and has instead been largely relegated to producer for projects such as Sky’s Penny Dreadful (also 2014) and The Shrek Musical (2013). No doubt he will see his departure from the James Bond franchise as an opportunity to get behind the director’s chair once again.
Spectre, the 24th film in the James Bond franchise, will see the return of Daniel Craig as the titular MI6 agent, as well as Naomie Harris as Eve Moneypenny, Ben Whishaw as Q and Ralph Fiennes as Gareth Mallory, the new head of MI6 following the death of Judi Dench’s Olivia Mansfield/M in Skyfall. Also starring are Christoph Waltz, Lea Seydoux, Andrew Scott, Dave Bautista and Monica Bellucci.
According to IMDB, the film’s premise is:
A cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organization. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind SPECTRE.
Spectre will be released in the United Kingdom on October 26 and November 6 in the United States.
