Are you still on the X-Men boat? I sure am. Although the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past kind of wrapped up the whole of the old X-Men movies into one timeline and opened up a new parallel universe/alternate timeline, I still thoroughly enjoy every minute of it and personally cannot wait for X-Men: Apocalypse.
With that, I bring the news that a new casting was made public by Apocalypse director Bryan Singer via an Instagram post. They have cast Psylocke, and she will be played by none other than Olivia Munn, girlfriend of Aaron Rodgers. The character Munn will be playing, Psyclocke, has had many versions in the history of Marvel comics. She has had powers which range from telepathy and telekinesis to being a ninja with superhuman strength who can shoot psychic blades. Which one will she be most like? Well, according to the comics which the movie Apocalypse is based on, Age of Apocalypse, Psylocke is the latter, a ninja who can create psychic blades. However, we can safely assume that it’s possible she may have some of the other skills as well, we will have to wait and see.
Psylocke has only ever been featured in one X-Men movie so far; X-Men: The Last Stand, and even then it was only at a glimpse. This will be the first movie where Psylocke will get a prominent role – much to the excitement of many comic-book fans everywhere. Munn will be joining the already star-studded cast including Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), James McAvoy (Charles Xavier), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Oscar Isaacs (Apocalypse), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Rose Byrne (Moira McTaggert), Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), Alexandrea Shipp (Storm), Lana Condor (Jubillee), Ben Hardy (Angel), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nigthcrawler) and Tye Sheriden (Cyclops).
Munn has already taken to social media to tease photos of her potential look (https://instagram.com/p/1hJg0zsmXj/?taken-by=oliviamunn), and gathering from those the costume choice is the classic blue leotard look, however during the costume fitting procedure it’s also safe to assume the costume could also be altered before the final look is decided. Now that Munn’s outfit has been teased, we are just waiting on some more X-Men outfits. Through all the films, X-Men have tried all the styles, from modern tough/dark looks to the more traditional in X-Men: First Class. But with Munn’s outfit, it looks as if they’re keeping with the fairly classic X-Men original looks.
Comments have been divided since the news spread. Some comic fans have criticised the casting choice, thinking that Munn is a difficult actress and therefore not worthy of playing Psylocke. Others are very pleased, stating that it’s a realisation of their ‘teenage boy fantasy and adult boy fantasy’.
What do you think, is Olivia Munn a good choice for the role of Psylocke?
