Yesterday, the BBC reported that famed auteurs Joel and Ethan Coen, known for such films as The Big Lebowski (1998), Fargo (1996), Barton Fink (1991), No Country for Old Men (2007), and Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), will jointly chair this year’s Cannes Film Festival Jury. This is the first time that the Jury has been chaired by two people.
Joel and Ethan Coen, 60 and 57 respectfully, have a long history with the Cannes, which this year spans from the 13th to the 24th April. In 1991, they received the festival’s most prestigious prize – the Palme d’Or – for their film Barton Fink (1991), which also won them the festival’s best director award. They received two further best director’s awards with Fargo (1996) and The Man Who Wasn’t There (2001). In 2013, their motion picture, Inside Llewyn Davis was awarded the festival’s Grand Jury Prize.
The Coens have also debuted seven out of their sixteen movies at the Cannes.
The Coens commented on the news from the set of their own film, Hail Caesar!, which stars George Clooney, Christophe Lambert, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, Josh Brolin and Channing Tatum, by saying that: “We welcome as always the opportunity to watch movies there from all over the world. Cannes is a festival that has been important to us since the very beginning of our career.”
The two brothers finished their statement by saying that: “Presiding over the Jury is a special honour, since we have never heretofore been president of anything.”
Whilst other jury posts will not be announced until later this year, with the sheer amount of high-quality films in contention, we can be sure that whoever is on the jury will have a very difficult time deciding winners.
Until then, we, as always, will abide.
