Any signs of America’s Brit invasion dying off any time soon have been dispelled once more, with James Corden becoming the latest export due to cross the Atlantic after being named as the new host of The Late Late Show.
He will replace Craig Ferguson, who recently announced that he will be stepping down in December after a decade of fronting the programme. It comes after David Letterman, the face of that other esteemed CBS chatshow The Late Show, also decided to call it a day.
The network themselves were quick to wax lyrical about Corden. Chairman of Entertainment Nina Tassler enthused: “He is a rare entertainment force who combines irresistible charm, warmth and originality with a diverse range of instincts and performance talent.” The man of the moment, meanwhile, said: “I can’t wait to get started and will do my very best to make a show America will enjoy.”
Bless him. But Corden’s versatility may not be the only reason for his selection. The chubby chappy is far from a stranger to audiences stateside, having appeared on Broadway and bagging a Tony into the bargain. On top of his existing movie credits, he is also in Into The Woods, a Johnny Depp vehicle due out on Christmas Day.
That’s more middle fingers to the playground bullies than you can shake a stick at, but what will this mean for Sky’s sports-themed panel show A League Of Their Own? Well, even Corden’s boundless energy would surely not be enough to keep that up as well, but just like The Late Late Show, it too will surely find a fitting replacement – just as long as it’s not current team captain Jamie Redknapp.
Speaking of which, some of you may also remember that, back in 2010, Corden deftly combined the sporting with a chatshow for James Corden’s World Cup Live. Katy Perry made a memorable appearance during its brief run, so who’d bet against a repeat on Corden’s US debut?
