You can relax, Pacific Rim fans, the release date for your sequel has been confirmed. Pacific Rim 2 will be arriving some time in April 2017, and Guillermo del Toro will be returning to direct.
Del Toro is currently working on the script with Zakk Penn, who has worked on Avengers Assemble, The Incredible Hulk, and X-Men: The Last Stand. Travis Beacham, co-writer of the first film, is also going to be contributing according to del Toro.
“The characters I love will return,” said del Toro, speaking with BuzzFeed. “Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.”
The director also quashed rumours that the film would be a prequel.
“Some people were wondering if we were going to do the prequel. I was never interested in doing that first wave of invasion. I’m going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one — but you will get really great spectacle.”
Before the sequel hits, we’ll also be getting an animated series set in the Pacific Rim universe. Looks like we’re going to be in for a lot more Kaiju Vs. Jaeger action in the near future.
