Godzilla sequel already being planned

A sequel to the latest incarnation of Godzilla is already in the works. Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros announced the news after the film took a hefty $93 million in the US on its opening weekend.

The film, which is directed by Gareth Edwards and stars Bryan Cranston, took another $103 million overseas, bringing the total weekend takings to nearly $200 million (more than enough to convince the people at the top that a sequel would be a wise investment).

Godzilla is only Edwards’ second feature film, his first being 2010’s Monsters, which was shot on the mind-bogglingly minuscule budget of $250 grand, and raked in over $4 million. There is no word as yet on whether Edwards will be attached to direct the sequel – however, the director has previously spoken about what direction he would like Godzilla to take next:

““With the exception of the 1954 [Godzilla] original, I would say my second favorite film is Destroy All Monsters. I just love the idea of a monster island. Having a world with these creatures in it. I find that fascinating and would like to treat that realistically…I wouldn’t want to limit it to one other foe, I think it’s more fun to – this question will come back to haunt me if we ever do a sequel – but I think multiple creatures make better movies.”
