Australian supernatural horror films are a rarity so it is nice to see one come along from time to time. The Babadook has already received plenty of hype and positive buzz from when it was shown at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.
The film is directed by Jennifer Kent and it focuses on a single mother trying to raise her son who is having horrible nightmares. Amelia (played by Essie Davis who was in the two Matrix sequels) is struggling to raise her six year old son, Samuel who appears to have behavioral problems. Samuel claims that a boogeyman-like monster called the Babadook is after him and the creature keeps appearing in his dreams. Amelia is skeptical at first and she refuses to believe what her son is telling her. Things slowly start to change however when Amelia starts to see a mysterious figure lurking around her house who looks like the creature Samuel described. Together, Amelia and Samuel will have to work together to try and vanquish the evil presence that has invaded their home.
Jennifer Kent apparently started a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the movie and it appears to have payed off. The trailer is very good and the film looks great despite being made on a limited budget. Essie Davis and Noah Wiseman who plays Samuel both look really convincing in the trailer and their performances should hopefully carry the film. The Babadook is also never seen clearly in the trailer as it always appears in shadow and has a very creepy voice. This is a good idea as it lets the audience use their imagination to figure out what the creature looks like. It’s a very effective trailer which leaves the audience wanting more and the film has the potential to be something special.
Entertainment One are distributing the film so hopefully it will appear in cinemas soon. Eager fans should look out for it and check out the trailer here.
