DayZ is probably the biggest success story in the gaming industry, having rocketed to 1 million sold copies in four weeks whilst still in its Alpha stage.
The phenomenally successful open world multiplayer survival horror game, which originated as a MOD for ARMA 2 but was released as a standalone in December due to popular demand, has become one of the most popular PC games since its launch, selling over 400,000 copies during its first week and rocketed past 800,000 copies by its third week.
Now DayZ creator Dean Hall has confirmed that the game has supposed 1 million sold copies by its fourth week. Confirming the news on Twitter, he wrote: “Well, 1 million copies in 4 weeks. So much for the death of PC Gaming.”
He later spoke to Polygon and said he was blown away by the success and said the astonishing achievement is a “shots fired” warning to to traditional publishers.
He said: “Previously with the mod I think traditional publishers could write DayZ off as a kind of anomaly. It was possible to think that this would not fully translate to the retail game in terms of real sales. This has got to be a ‘shots fired’ moment for those in the traditional publishing model, and their investors.”
The early access of DayZ is available on Steam for £19.99.
