[dropcap] A[/dropcap] 24 hour ceasefire in video games has ended as part of a show of support to victims of the Sandy Hook massacre.
Operation: OSCeaseFire began on Saturday morning and finished Sunday morning as an equivalent to a moment of silence to show love and support to the families and victims who were gunned down last year on December 14th at Sandy Hook Elementary School by Adam Lanza. After killing his mother in their home, Lanza went on to kill 6 teachers and 20 young children.
According to the official report of the shooting, Lanza owned several video games such as Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, Doom, Battlefield, Left for Dead and others. Many believe that the violence portrayed in such games may have motivated Lanza’s killing spree.
Following the massacre Antwand Pearman, President, Founder & Editor-in-Chief of GamerFitNation, launched the operation. He said: “It’s an opportunity for gamers to show that the gun violence for which the media frequently criticizes video games does not control them, and to symbolically pay their respects to victims of gun-related tragedies … We are simply making a statement that we as Gamers are not going to sit back and ignore the lives that were lost. Instead, we will embrace the families with our love and support.”
The operation gained attention from people around the world, spreading across numerous social media networks.
For 24 hours, gamers participating in the inspirational movement pledged not to play games which include violent content such as guns, knives and death. Instead gamers will be playing family-friendly games that include racing, sports and others.
