Ryan Reynolds to Star in Highlander Remake

There can be only one. And that one appears to be Ryan Reynolds, if reports are to be believed. The newlywed actor is stepping into the tartan of Clan Macleod, following in the footsteps of Christopher Lambert to star in the new Highlander remake.

In 1986 the original film of the same name was released, making a star out of American-born French actor Christopher Lambert. The tale of a group of immortals fighting to be the last one standing was a cult hit. Its popularity grew, and spawned numerous sequels, cartoons, books, comics, not to mention two television shows.

The news that Reynolds is to be the next immortal to slash it out for supremacy may be met with some trepidation. His star took a slight battering after his turn in the title role in DC’s Green Lantern, but he has previously proven himself to be adept in many different genres.

His first break came playing Michael ‘Berg’ Bergen in the ABC sitcom Two Guys a Girl and a Pizza Place. The show ran for four seasons and also starred Joss Whedon favourite, Nathan Fillion. More comedy roles followed including Van Wilder and Just Friends, along with the occasional foray into horror with a remake of The Amityville Horror. His leading man status was set with Definitely, Maybe and was further cemented in The Proposal, co-starring Sandra Bullock. His action prowess was showcased in Blade Trinity as Hannibal King and then in X-Men Origins: Wolverine as Deadpool.

His sword wielding as Hannibal may come in handy when playing Connor Macleod in the new Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directed version of Highlander. Fresnadillo had previously directed 28 Days Later, so a gritty remake may be on the cards. As with all things being retooled these days, we very much doubt there will be only one
