Some people are born with the spirit to seek adventure and an eventful life. The Australian naturalist Robyn Davidson had this hunger for adventure and at the age of 27 she crossed the Australian outback in 1977 from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean. Her only companions on this epic trek were four camels and her dog. The trip covered 1,700 miles and many believed it could not be done, but Davidson is one of those rare people who defied the odds stacked against her.
Tracks is a new Australian drama which chronicles Davidson’s journey across the desert and it is based on her memoirs. The film stars Mia Wasikowska as Davidson and is directed by John Curran who has directed dramas before including Stone and We Don’t Live Here Anymore. There have been previous attempts to adapt the story into a film, over the years both Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts were considered for the lead role. Wasikowska is well cast here though and the perfect choice for a role like this, she has the look of a woman keen to take on new challenges and escape her comfort zone. It’s a role that is well suited to talented young actresses such as Wasikowska and Saoirse Ronan who appeared in The Way Back which was also about a long journey.
The supporting cast includes Adam Driver who appears to be a possible love-interest character for Davidson and Emma Booth.
Tales of human endeavor are often entertaining and inspiring as it is cool to see someone triumph over adversity. Tracks has the potential to be very good as it has a solid cast and an interesting tale to tell. The trailer succeeds because it wisely focuses on Wasikowska and gives viewers a glimpse of her life before and during her adventure. It also features plenty of long establishing shots which reveal the vastness of the desert and lots of slow dissolves from one scene to another. The latter in particular really accentuates the slow pace of the movie itself.
The film will be released in the UK on April 24th, 2014. Check out the trailer and share your thoughts.
