[dropcap]W[/dropcap]ar has been declared in the video game industry as Activision say they are prepared to take back all the records that Grand Theft Auto V has achieved.
Activision, the publisher of the record breaking Call of Duty franchise, say that they are happy for Rockstar’s GTA V success, but say they will be regaining those records they once held when their new installment in the Call of Duty franchise – Call of Duty: Ghosts – releases in November.
Grand Theft Auto V launched on September 17th and quickly became the biggest launch in the history of entertainment. It broke $1 billion in just three days, outsold its predecessor GTA IV, became the biggest digital release on the Playstation and broke an astonishing seven Guinness World Records. It also received worldwide critical acclaim.
Those accomplishments, however, don’t deter Activision and they are eager to reclaim the records they once held.
In an interview with MCVUK.com, Activision’s UK Senior Brand Manager, Kevin Flynn, says that Call of Duty: Black Ops II has sold more than 3 million units in the UK and they are looking forward to the challenge posed by Grand Theft Auto V’s commercial success.
“Congratulations to the team at Rockstar for their success,” he said. “We look forward to getting the record back before the next GTA title.
“We know that our unaided awareness for Ghosts is leading the way against other unreleased triple-A titles. Our digital content has proven extremely popular and Black Ops II has sold more than 3m units in the UK.”
Flynn also dismissed concerns that the Call of Duty franchise is declining after sales for previous installments have slightly fallen.
Call of Duty: Ghosts launches on November 5th for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, PC whilst versions for the next-gen consoles PS4 and Xbox One when those consoles are released.
