[dropcap]S[/dropcap]am Rockwell is in talks with Fox 2000 to star in their new Poltergeist remake. The news was leaked by movie website The Wrap. If Rockwell joins the project he will star alongside actress Rosemarie DeWitt, who has already been cast in her role. Gil Kenan, the director of Monster House has also been hired to direct the reboot, and it will be produced by veteran horror director Sam Raimi.
Rockwell is apparently looking at a few different offers right now, so there is no guarantee he will take the role. The actor is talented though and his presence would certainly be a benefit to the project.
There isn’t much information about the plot available, but it has been revealed that the reboot will focus on the Bowen family. The family will have a young daughter called Madison who is abducted by supernatural forces, which is similar to the plot in the original film. Rockwell would play the patriarch in the family if he is cast. The first Poltergeist is a classic, and it had both Tobe Hooper and Steven Spielberg behind the wheel. The cast, including Jobeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson and Heather O’Rourke as their daughter Carole-Anne, was also memorable, and the actors gave excellent performances. The film raised the bar for supernatural horror and is a tough act to follow.
Supernatural horror movies have seen a resurgence in recent years thanks to the success of films like The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity. Studios and fans alike love them, and they make a lot of money. Carrie and Poltergeist are both getting remakes, and the Evil Dead reboot was already released earlier this year. It will be interesting to see how long this love affair lasts.
