[dropcap]I[/dropcap]n 2011 we heard the news that we are to expect a sequel to iconic and android-tastic sci-fi film Blade Runner, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Harrison Ford. Since then we haven’t heard much at all about Scott’s fabled sequel; in fact, we haven’t heard anything. But now it seems that something is stirring at Camp Blade Runner.

When it was originally announced that we would be making another trip to the dark dystopian future depicted in the first film, die-hard fans were not best pleased – because of course we weren’t. Revisiting the halcyon days of classic science fiction film has not been working out particularly well for anyone of late, and especially not for Ridley Scott. Just take a long hard look at Prometheus, the sort-of prequel to his masterwork Alien, released in 2012.  However, our fears were somewhat put to rest by the presence of original Blade Runner scriptwriter Hampton Fancher.

Fancher has indeed come up trumps and completed a screenplay for the sequel, but it now seems that Michael Green is being drafted in for a rewrite – and suddenly everyone’s worried again. Green’s previous screenplays include The Green Lantern, a film which wasn’t exactly welcomed with open arms by the critics (they ripped it to shreds). While the fact that Green has come on board is a sign that pre-production on the sequel may now be in full swing (whether that’s good news or not depends on your viewpoint), for many lovers of the original film his presence does not bode well for the general quality of the sequel.

Even so, the proof of the Replicant will be in the Voight-Kampff test, and we may not be able to shine a bright light into the eyes of Blade Runner 2 for quite some time to come. The only thing we think we know about the sequel is that Harrison Ford probably won’t be appearing in it. Rumours that he was in talks to return to his role as main character Deckard were denied last year, and although nothing has been officially confirmed as of yet, it seems likely that he’ll be tied up in the near future reprising the most famous of all his past roles in the planned sequel to Star Wars.
