[dropcap]W[/dropcap]hen Zach Braff took to Kickstarter back in April he had only set out a target of $2 million for his planned dramedy I Wish I Was Here. However, support for the project has soared above everyone’s expectations with the film pulling in a hefty $3.1 million towards its budget.
Braff took to twitter on the 24th to announce the end of the campaign saying, “Thank you, thank you, thank you. I won’t let you down! Let’s do this.” In fact Braff has already begun work on the project, having posted a video of the concept art being developed, which you can check out over at Kickstarter.
Braff will direct and co-write (along with his brother Adam) Wish I Was Here, which will see him play Aidan Bloom, a struggling actor, husband and father who regularly drifts off into a dream world where he is futuristic knight. So far so Billy Liar, however, a spanner is thrown into the (somewhat avoided) works as Bloom is forced to home school his children after his sick father can no longer pay the school fees. According to Braff, on his Kickstarter page, “The result is some funny chaos, until Aidan decides to scrap the traditional academic curriculum and come up with his own. Through teaching them about life his way, Aidan gradually discovers some of the parts of himself he couldn’t find.”
This one could prove to be Braff’s most ambitious project yet. If he is able to tap back into the quirky-yet-cool comedy of Garden State, we could be in for a treat. As for Kickstarter, we may be seeing the beginning of a huge change in the way that films, specifically indie, are funded. We’ll have to wait until 2014 to see how this one turns out.
