Back in 1996 an alien blockbuster propelled Will Smith into the stratosphere of superstardom. Now, well after a decade since its initial release, now it seems there could be an Independence Day sequel in the works.
It’s been over a decade, but Independence Day still remains one of the most iconic films of recent times. The destruction of the White House will live on, even if the CGI has come on in leaps and bounds since its untimely demise.
Watching the film now is like welcoming back an old friend and the news that has been doing the rounds is sure to excite any sci-fi fan. Producer Dean Devlin has whet our appetites by recently stating that he hopes a sequel will be on the way sooner rather than later.
‘I can’t say that it’s going to happen, but I can say for the first time that for the first time in eleven years, Roland Emmerich and I are working together.’
German born Emmerich has enjoyed mixed success since the blockbuster was released. With the highs of The Day After Tomorrow, came the lows of Godzilla. Should the film have even a fraction of the success of its predecessor, it would mark a return to form for the director/producer.
There have always been rumours of a sequel and, according to Devlin, a script was produced 10 years ago. Although money exchanged hands, the script never saw the light of day after being deemed inadequate by the writer himself.
‘After I finished the script, I gave the money back and I said, ‘Don’t even read the script. The script is okay, but we can’t make an okay sequel to Independence Day. The fans deserve better than this.”
With details of the sequel being held under wraps, Devlin says that he and Emmerich have cracked it this time and have produced a sequel that fans of the original can be proud of. There are no reports on any of the roles being reprised as of yet, but in the interim the original can be viewed in glorious 3D.
Due for release in 2013, the film will be re-released so fans old and new can witness fragments of helicopter blades coming towards them and duck as the Black Knights squadron defend against invasion. Now that’s what we call a close encounter.
Is this something you would get excited about?
