Robert Downey Jr. was the perfect actor to play the chairman of Stark Industries and alter ego of Iron Man, Tony Stark in Iron Man the movie. It was a role that suited his unique acting style and personality. The movie was also a great success for both Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Favreau the director. In fact the movie did so well that a sequel was inevitable. Iron Man 2 was a decent movie but it paled in comparison to the first film. Now a third movie is due out this year and Shane Black takes over from John Favreau as the director. Most of the other main cast members from Iron Man 2 also return including Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts and Don Cheadle as James Rhodes aka War Machine. Sir Ben Kingsley also joins the cast as the villain Mandarin and Guy Pearce appears as Aldrich Killian, a scientist involved with Nano technology. Shane Black is a good director and he is well known for writing screenplays for classic movies like the Lethal Weapon series. He also directed good movies like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang which starred Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer. So Iron Man 3 appears to be in safe hands which is reassuring.
Plot details are scarce at the moment but the trailer does reveal some interesting bits of information. Tony Stark is still saving the world from threats as Iron Man and trying to improve his relationship with his assistant Pepper Potts. Saving the world as Iron Man seems to be taking its toll on Stark as he starts having nightmares and trouble sleeping. He looks worn out and the movie appears to have a darker tone than the previous films in the series. Stark’s old buddy James Rhodes is still serving as an officer in the Air Force and he appears to have a new Iron Man suit that he uses to help Stark. In the previous movie he took a black Iron Man suit from Stark’s lab and then became known as War Machine, a well known character from the comic books. Stark has made many enemies in the past and now a new foe known as the Mandarin has appeared. Mandarin is a rich, powerful leader of an international terrorist organization with a lot of resources at his disposal. He launches an attack that destroys Stark’s Malibu home and Tony is forced to salvage what resources he can to fight Mandarin. In the trailer there are also a couple of shots where Tony and Pepper are threatened by a mysterious assailant wearing an Iron Man suit. It is unlikely that this attacker is Rhodes so their identity is a mystery at present.
The film looks like it will have top notch special effects which is to be expected. It will also be interesting to see a more serious side to Tony Stark. The previous movies had a fair bit of humour and plenty of one liners which is something Robert Downey Jr. does very well. Iron Man 3 appears to have less of that which makes a change. Sir Ben Kingsley is a well known veteran actor and having him here as the film’s man villain is the icing on the cake. One of the only flaws with the previous Iron Man films was that they lacked compelling main villains. Hopefully Iron Man 3 will change that trend as the Mandarin is a pretty important character and foe for Iron Man in the comic books. The trailer does a good job of not showing the Mandarin too much but it still gives him a rather nice introduction. It’s also nice to see a trailer that doesn’t completely spoil the entire plot of the film in two minutes.
Iron Man 3 has the potential to be the best film in the series and time will tell if it can live up to the hype. The film is released on April 26th so have a look at the trailer and share your thoughts.
