The first Red movie released in 2010 was a popular action comedy. The movie had veteran actors like Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren and Morgan Freeman playing retired CIA agents. The old timers were forced to come out of retirement and go back into action when their lives were threatened. Seeing so many well know actors together was a treat and they all seemed to enjoy making the film. Red was actually inspired by the DC comic of the same name created by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner.
In the sequel Red 2, Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) is back in action and forced to undertake another crazy mission. John Malkovich and Helen Mirren return for the sequel and they are joined by Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta Jones and Mary-Louise Parker. Parker played Frank’s retirement pension case worker Sarah Ross in the first movie. Sarah is the fish out of water caught up in all the action and mayhem as she joins Frank on his escapades.
Frank has somehow managed to become the number one target on Interpol’s most wanted list and MI6 has issued a contract on his life. He goes on the run around Europe with Sarah Ross who is now his girlfriend and his old CIA chum Marvin (John Malkovich.) Marvin seems to enjoy all the action while Frank prefers a normal, quiet life. Helen Mirren’s character Victoria appears to be one of the assassins after Frank which is interesting. Catherine Zeta Jones plays Frank’s ex-girlfriend and Anthony Hopkins appears as a bad guy. Korean actor Byung-Hun Lee also stars as another villain. Fans of Korean cinema may recognize him as he played the secret agent in I Saw The Devil.
The director is Dean Parisot and he takes over from Robert Schwentke the director of the first movie. Parisot’s previous directing credits include Galaxy Quest and Fun With Dick and Jane.
Red 2 will hopefully provide plenty of entertainment. The cast seem to be having a good time and there are plenty of jokes. It’s always entertaining to see actors like Bruce Willis and John Malkovich in comedic roles and Willis is a master at playing the reluctant hero.
Red 2 will be released on August 2nd.
